2009-05-14 11:36:00 | i want to be able to connect to my computer from work and when i was running xp it worked fine. Now im running the W7 RC it doesnt want to play ball, ive checked all my settings and everything seems to be in order (reserverd ip in router, port 3389 forwarded etc) and i can connect to the machine through the local network but not from a remote PC Ive also checked windows firewall and tried setting the ip as the DMZ in the router but still nothing Its not a critical thing but i find it convinient to be able to access it remotely, and im starting to get withdrawal symptoms. :stare: Any ideas? :thanks Kieran

2009-05-14 11:40:00 | Personally I use Team Viewer (www.teamviewer.com) - works fine , doesn't need any special knowledge on setting up remotes. It can be set to run on startup, and you can enter in your own password (login) Use the full Version - more control/options. | wainuitech (129) | |
2009-05-14 11:56:00 | What OS and version of MSTSC is the client running? Is Allow Remote Access (the "less secure" one) enabled on the host? | jwil1 (65) | |
2009-05-14 12:11:00 | the remote client is running xp sp3 fully updated, and the other computer on the local network is the same, and the local computer can connect but the remote pc can't yes i have got the "allow any version to connect" setting enabled and everything in the router is set up properly, thats whats got me stumped wainuitech: i have heard of that program before, just down loaded and set up on my W7 Computer and ive put the file on my usb flash drive with my id aswell to take to work tomorrow and try. Kieran edit: i just rememberd were i heard of team viewer, a couple of weeks ago one of the designers at work sent me the teamviewer setup file for something we were working on (we work at different sites) so he could see my screen and i could show him what i had coded so far, and when i recived the file via skype, the antivirus software went nutts and locked the file down and i couldnt use it, claiming a trojan horse!... we ended up using remote assistance instead.

2009-05-14 20:36:00 | morning all, I just got to work and tried teamviewer out and it conected and worked  My only niggle is that even set to "Optimize Speed" the refresh rate is a lot slower than i was getting using remote desktop on xp but thats probably a combination of 7's extra visual oomph and the fact that the connection here at work is an overloaded POS as we have 2 servers in two remote sites keeping sync with each other over a standard adsl line plus a citrix server running like 3 apps over the same connection. SLooooooooooow! K1eran

2009-05-14 21:03:00 | Yeah line connection speed / Traffic can have a big effect on Team Viewers's performance. You have prob done this - make sure it removes the desktop wallpaper when connected - that slows it a lot if its activated. Try it when the person you are trying to help has dial up :sleep Out of Interest - you mentioned trying to use W7 and had problems - have you by any chance tried it from Vista ? Edited; Just been doing some reading on this - common problem it seems - found this similar suggestion on many places Make sure that the user in question is a member of a group that has the "Access this computer through Terminal Services" user right accessible via Group Policy. ----make sure Are you a member of the Remote Users Group If the W7 PC ( different name maybe to the XP) has not been allowed/setup to the remote, its possible the connection is failing ??? Only a guess.

2009-05-14 22:34:00 | Teamviewers performance can be quite bad on a slow connection, so when I'm at home I use it over LAN. Try disabling the firewall completely and see if that works. Blam

2009-05-14 22:56:00 | no i havent tried connecting to it from a vista based PC, as i dont own/have access to one, but my other xp based pc can connect fine from within the LAN.... Ill connect using teamviewer on my lunch break and look at the terminal services user rights you mentioned. Blam, ill give it a go first to see if it is the firewall that is blocking me  kieran

2009-05-14 23:44:00 | Hmm weird, I have no problem using RDP from any machine so far to my Win7 x64 box. I'll have a look when I get home and see if I can find anything in particular that might be your issue. | inphinity (7274) | |
