| 608222 | 2007-11-05 00:34:00 | Piracy may or not boost CD sales. The thought seems to be negative. Interestingly enough, there was a parallel in 1967 when Radio Hauraki began pirating in the Hauraki Gulf. Before Radio Hauraki there was only a few hours of the latest music on the radio per week. Radio Hauraki said they would broadcast the latest music continually - and they did. The record distributors moaned that the record buying public would no longer buy records as they could hear the latest music all day. But that was not the case. The fact that Radio Hauraki played the latest continually, stimulated interest in the latest music and record sales increased - quite the opposite to what the record companies thought might happen. Perhaps piracy may stimulate the same type of interest? Roscoe. |

| 608226 | 2007-11-06 03:20:00 | In Australia it is sales of local artists CD's that are increasing. And I would say the same is true here, we tend to like to hear our own music. Regards Digby |

| 608227 | 2007-11-07 03:01:00 | One of the reasons for the increase in the sales of local CDs in Australia is no doubt because the Australian radio stations play local artists because they have a quota system on both radio and television. They do not have a choice, they HAVE to play a certain amount of local content which is why there are plenty of Australian acts on radio and television. They have had a quota for the last 40 years that I know of - pity they won't do it here. It would do great things for NZ talent and stop them heading to Australia where, when they record a CD or appear on TV, they are promoted as local talent. What was the question again? |

In a population-to-artist ratio . . . let's imagine it would be about 2% or so like the rest of the world . . . I just picked that number outta my head . . . but it seems to fit . If it IS 2% . . then does anyone who lives there (NZ) think it is a fitting number? The reason I ask is that it seems to me that local talent is never really appreciated in the first place as the attitude is "Why go see/hear these guys? We can see them anytime we want as they live here . Let's see someone foreign!" With the smallish population in NZ . . . it might be a more local phenomenon than youse guys would like to admit . With a small cross-section I have the idea that youse guys feel more talented than other places . . . but maybe it's just because you almost all know each other . In a small group . . . it's always easier to get a pulse on the people around you than if the crowd gets larger like in Australia or (shudder) the US f'rinstance . With that thought in mind then . . . I feel commonality actually begets lack of interest and causes a mental skewing of facts . Does that make any sense at all? Trying to be brief here . . . really! |
