607551 2007-11-02 07:21:00 Kazaa connects to Fastrack, Use to be the biggest P2P network, probably not these days.

en.wikipedia.org

Gnutella are the opposition to fastrack.

607552 2007-11-02 11:26:00 Ive never used a torrent site before, whats up with port fowarding? Is it a must do? rob_on_guitar (4196)
607553 2007-11-02 20:11:00 Frostwire = Win! Its LimeWire but not...

Torrents, you dont need to have any port-forwarding however you're more likely to get better speeds / connections etc if you do. Its recommended, as is encryption.

Use uTorrent as your client - Uses the least system resources but does everything you'll ever need & more :)

Just be aware not all Torrent sites are equal for downloading Linux distro's (remember warez is illegal :P)

There are 2 types.

1. Public torrent sites that can be found using Google. Problem with these are, people are inclined to limit there upload speed (so they leech off you and don't give back as much). This means even though there are 1000 seeders and only 600 leechers you can still be pulling only 30KB/s. Mind due there are some half decent public sites around these days, but its a real mixed bag. Watch for fake torrents and spyware/viruses.

2. Private sites. Estiablished sites are usually invite only. Every person has there own logon and a up/down ratio is recorded. A minimun ratio of around .5 ish is usually minimum standard. This mean there is NO point limiting the up speed.

Speed is usually awesome and even 300 seeders and 600 leechers one can hit 500KB/s+. Once the torrent is say 6hrs old I can usually start and reach my full internet speeds which is 10MB on Cable within a minute. Problem with this in NZ we have Data caps, some sites wont enforce a ratio if you pay a small donation which may be way cheaper than what we pay for data here in NZ, others cheat. The torrents are 99.9% of the time clean and what they say they are as any funny stuff results in a ban.

I agree with above Utorrent is the best client, however the quality of the site/torrent is far more important than which client you choose to go with.

Watch for fake torrents and spyware/viruses.I disagree with you there, generally the public trackers for Linux distros (http://linuxtracker.org/ being one of the more well known ones) are extremely fast, and usually very well seeded. Fake torrents are also generally not a problem - every major distro will publish md5sum hashes of its ISOs, so you can make sure the file is the same. Most of them also have a torrent download link from the distro website - you can't get much more authentic than that!

Thanks - that was really useful info on Torrenting .

I recently moved from Auck to Bellevue near MS and as you know in US DSL sells by speed ONLY . . . . hence my renewed interest in file sharing hobby :)

First time i was ordering mine from AT&T and asked the rep on the phone what was the data cap on my plan . . . . he went silent in puzzlement :D

I dont even know what a Broadband usage meter is anymore!

Even sitting on 1 . 5Mpb connection here for $20/month, things feel zooming down at breakneck speed which i never experienced even with Telecoms
claimed pathetic 7Mbp download line in my Mt Eden home .

607560 2007-11-03 05:43:00 uTorrent is overrated, its seems to be the client of choice for those who try to fake their share ratios and thus its often blocked by many of the private trackers, or only allow the latest version until that become widespread enough that it gets banned too. At one stage it was getting updated every few days in attempts to get around the bans from private trackers.

Azureus would also have to be incredibly overated but thats more to do with the fact its programmed in Java.

BitComet also seems to get banned from many private torrent sites but thats because it uses DHT and can potential make private torrents available to the public.

BitComet has always proved very reliable to me, not that I use alot of private torrent sites.

Battleneter I think you'll find that Bletch is very serious about the use of torrents for linux, torrent provide an awesome way to distribute distro easily and fast. Care to list the legal files you download with torrents?
