607852 2007-11-05 02:10:00 I don't get it . . . unless youse guys are still burning sulfur-based diesel .

The metro buses here are running on butane or propane and the diesel semi's are running either purified diesel or kerosene which has no soot to speak of .

The gas cars here are pretty clean now too . . . and some are so clean that their exhaust is negative emissions . . . so clean that the air they take in gets purified in combustion and goes out the tailpipe cleaner than it went in .

But . . . that's here and I cannot speak about what youse guys use for fuel .

Baked beans have the same effect on me Joe

You appear to be saying you don't get pollution from cars over there,we are talking in general, not the odd few that may have sorted prob .

If it's 10% of your fleet I would be surprised .

I dont know over there, but stand by a bus exaust here and youll never want to do it again, Auckland has a nice haze is the sky in the mornings, I highly doubt its from all the smokers .

"I don't crack open a beer every 30 minutes of the day .
I don't drink and drive .
I don't throw my empty beer bottles on the sidewalk when I've finished . "

Sorry Cyabro, I couldnt let this one go lol, you would be surprised the amount of people who do .

I am more anecdotally bothered by bad air as I get older . . . bad lungs, forest fires, smog . . . and the field in which I worked are all against me . . . but . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . yesterday I went to Mira Loma (50 miles or so, Sunday early:AM), and most of the vehicles on the freeway were of pretty recent model . I didn't see any gross polluters that trip . . although I know they exist .

The laws are getting tougher on polluters . Smoke tickets by law enforcement are about the meanest thing that you can get .

It usually requires a total rebuild, re-smog and reinstall smog devices . . . or worse yet, scrapping with receipt to present to DMV as proof that you had the car chopped into scrap .

If you decide to resurrect an older car, then whatever year of engine you install is also now the new production year of the old vehicle and it has to have the total package that was on that engine for that year . This means: Fuel injection and computer control for same, catalytic converter(s) as necessary for that same new year, transmission, ABS, ECU, BCU and any other control computer that was on the installed engine .

That makes it almost impossible to comprehend, but that's the law as it stands . So . . older cars with newer engines/transmissions are now considered a full NEW package and will be tested appropriately .

Diesels are not permitted to come into California with amounts over a certain gallonage of fuel from other non-complying states . . and "off-road" or farm diesel with it's red dye is strictly verboten! Big . . . REALLY BIG fines for that!

The idea is to drive people outta their older smog-makers and get them to buy new cars . Of course, the manufacturers are not involved with this at all . . . . . <yeah!>

But really the air is a lot cleaner and the cars are less damaging to the air and the buses and semis are not belching cinders and flames any more . . . and we have closed all our smelters (we had a few in SoCal) and moved them to China along with our heavy industries so the Chinese can reap the wonders of the modern mechanical age like we did for so long .

So . . if you take a 1963 Pontiac and put a 2005 Cadillac NorthStar engine with transmission into it, it then becomes a 2005 Pontiac and has to have all the NorthStar Cadillac engine parts, computers, fuel tank, transmission, catalytic converters(s), OX sensors, exhaust system, etc, etc .

Gets a little expensive to do it nowadays .

607856 2007-11-05 21:52:00 Joe,do get out of habit of writing a book each time you have something to say,not sure who reads them ,but I don't.

If others do like the prolonged diatribe,do let us know.

Agreed.

SJ....bit of constructive criticism..:p .....what you say maybe interesting, but too much waffle fella.

I'm not sure if you want us to read it, or you just enjoy getting the view out regardless, but I for one take a look at 5000 words and don't bother.

That cool?

607858 2007-11-05 22:56:00 Thank !@#$ I dont live in the usa. My latest concession to emission control was a hose from the oil filler cap breather to a stub I welded on the air filter on my Anglia. chicken one (6501)

607860 2007-11-06 05:16:00 Well I wasn't going to read SJ's post because it is rather long, until I read Cicero & Allblack's post and I went back and read it.

It turnt out to be rather intresting and gave me some insight on how they do things over there.
