774007 2009-05-15 03:35:00 Hey what ports do i need to open and forward for vpn? nedkelly (9059)
774008 2009-05-15 03:38:00 Most routers normally have an option called 'VPN' or something similar which does it all for you. If not,

Ports Needed for PPTP VPN

- TCP Port 1723
- UDP Port 500

Ports Needed for L2TP VPN

- TCP Port 1701
- UDP Port 500
Ports Needed for IPSec/ESP

- UDP Port 500

774009 2009-05-15 03:43:00 PPTP uses port 1723 TCP.
IPSEC uses port 500 UDP for IKE negotiation, but otherwise relies on its own transport protocols (ESP and AH), so your router needs to either be an IPSEC endpoint, or support IPSEC passthrough.
L2TP uses port 1701 UDP.

774011 2009-05-15 04:39:00 Setting up a VPN is a multiple step process, are you sure you've done all the necessary steps? wratterus (105)
774012 2009-05-15 05:13:00 You'll need to be more specific about what you've done to set it up, how you're trying to connect, what type of VPN you're using, and what you're trying to achieve :) inphinity (7274)
774013 2009-05-15 05:15:00 Which type of VPN are you using?

IPSEC doesn't usually play nicely with NAT unless you go to a lot of trouble, and PPTP requires forwarding the GRE protocol (in addition to TCP/1723 - GRE is a protocol in its own right, it doesn't run over TCP or UDP).

If you're just wanting something simple that works, you can't beat OpenVPN. It runs on a single TCP or UDP port, and can pass through almost anything imaginable - including web proxies :banana.

774014 2009-05-16 06:36:00 I set one up the other day and it allows me to connect. The only ports I have forwarded are:

TCP 1723
47 (GRE)

I tried connecting and setting up a game but the other side couldn't see it (although I can access files), further investigation is required :badpc:
