773892 2009-05-14 19:49:00 Have been playing with the 32 bit version just loaded into a file on my data drive, now wish to remove and try the 64 bit to see if everything I use will work. I am assuming I can just delete the files and then do a fixboot and fixmbr from my XP CD. Can someone just confirm this so I can get onto it tonight. :thanks:thanks gary67 (56)
773893 2009-05-14 21:42:00 Format over it with 64 bit. I usually keep a copy of the boot.ini file for the main OS I use.. Then after I finish with whatever OS, I overwrite boot.ini (with the original text). Reboot (then it'll load the original OS only). Then format the partition, I installed the other OS on. 773894 2009-05-14 22:21:00 You really should make a seperate partition for windows 7 just to be safe, or install it on a vhd.

IT should be fine if you just run the fixboot and fixmbr command though. BAckup your data, just incase something goes wrong.

773895 2009-05-15 05:22:00 I have daily backups of my data and yes I should have made a new partition but didn't just put it on my data drive gary67 (56)
773896 2009-05-15 08:02:00 Word of warnig you cannot just delete the folders in XP. I went into Puppy linux live and deleted them then had to restore C using an image I made as my XP CD kept blue screening something in the Win 7 install was corrupting my onboard video. All done now. Will make a partition this time You live and learn gary67 (56)
773897 2009-05-15 09:02:00 You can also make a VHD instead and install it on that-it'll be as if you have 2 HDDs and you don't need to configure bootloaders or anything-once you want to uninstall it, you just delete the VHD.

I have instructions on one of my posts in my blog(under "Install Windows7 on VHD":
win-help.co.cc

BTW Its quite different to installing as a VM, its pretty much dual booting kinda
