610225 2007-11-10 07:58:00 Hi,

Just wondering what is the preferred brand of Camera? Canon, Nikon, Olympus? I admit I'm not too up-to-date with cameras but know enough. I don't want a Sony, the image quality is bad.

I'm after something pretty high-end without going SLR. I need a really good camera for traveling overseas, so don't want a big heavy beast. Preferably 12MP~. If it was around the $800 mark I could spend the rest of the money on a few flash cards. RAW mode would be nice to have.

Some of the cameras that look a bit like an SLR look quite nice. E.g.
Nikon Coolpix P5100 (www.dpreview.com)
or
Canon PowerShot G9 (www.dpreview.com)

Any suggestions? I'm sure there are some good photographers on this forum, just ramble on about what you've got or would get if you were getting a new camera. :)

610226 2007-11-10 09:13:00 I can only speak from experience of owning a Canon S2IS - although the range is up to S5IS now ($699) which is 8 megapixels.

Being made by a company that has made cameras for decades before the digital era, it handled absolutely beautifully. I handled a Sony of about the same level and it wasn't nearly as nice to use. This is really important because no matter how many features your camera has, in the end it's just a tool so the easier it fits in your hands, the easier it is to find and use buttons without looking - the easier it will be to just shoot photos.

One really good thing is the LCD screen can be moved, swung out and swivelled - and put away so that the screen is reversed against the camera body.

Don't be sucked in by megapixels. Doubling the megapixel count makes very little visible difference to photos. www.kenrockwell.com

Almost all of the cameras that you are looking at have Sony sensors. As Deane says, the megapixel race is a shame as it is responsible for some of the image quality issues around today. However you're stuck with buying what's available not what should be made.

You've already found one of the best camera forum sites around. Read what those posters have to say. Make up your mind soon enough so that you've used the camera and got some experience with it before you go away.

PS Could be parallel import. I bought a Canon NZ sourced S5 from Computer Direct for $660 incl GST & Courier.

610229 2007-11-10 10:15:00 I want the higher MP rating so I can blow the pictures up to poster size for my wall if they are good enough. Which of the cameras I pointed out have the Sony sensors? I'd like to try and avoid those if possible. Is there some rule to the amount of MPs and quality of CCD to make a nice picture at full resolution? Lorcan (12618)
610230 2007-11-10 12:50:00 Seriously, einfo.co.nz have some of the best deals around. I just bought a FujiFilm S5700 (Don't think its high enough to match your specs) but it cost me $319 while everyone else was $330+ or in some cases, $450+. beeswax34 (63)

Either of these sound fine to me . Canon vs Nikon is personal preference and both excellent brand names above all other brands .

Both available from trademe dealers as new items .
I got my Canon 30D off and lenses there and I have no regrets .

If you're really worried about megapixel ratings, stick with film. There's at least 25 - 35 megapixels of information on a 35mm frame. So, take your shots on 35mm, get them developed and then scan them. You should be able to get a good Nikon film scanner for under $1000.

You have to quadruple the megapixels to make a noticeable difference in end product.

As for enlargements of digital shots - have a look at the following site - the guy enlarged to 16 x 24 inches the same shot at 5, 8 and 13 megapixels. Nobody could tell the difference. pogue.blogs.nytimes.com

12 Megapixel Camera RAW Files you will need serious storage space . Maybe look at getting a DataBank or similar . My Databank is 80Gb just plug various cards in and press the button and they are stored, then re-use the Card the following day .

My Canon 30D jpeg files are averaging 3Mb and the RAW ones average 7Mb . My Canon is only 8 . 2MP so for a 12MP add 50% to that size approx .

610234 2007-11-10 19:19:00 I have bought the Lumix (Panasonic) DMC-FZ8 - which has 7.2 Mega pixels and 12 optical zoom for $565. It was rated "Best of the best" by Consumer Mazazine fairly recently. If you have glasses the viewfinder is digital and you can adjust for your eyesight and not have to wear your glasses when using. That was the last clincher for me.

The LCD screen is 2 1/2" and the menus are easy to read. The LCD resolution is a huge 207,000 pixels which is not quite double the resolution of the three Canon models I compared it with !!

It does do RAW

Should do whatever you want it to do I think (though I would certainly be interested in other opinions as I am a bit of a novice)
