610148 2007-11-10 06:17:00 Well after seeing the other thread mutate into a witchhunt Im hoping this one will stay on track. I noticed there were quite a few who used to smoke but now have stopped.

I have stopped smoking for 5 weeks so far, havent really had the urge until the last couple of days.

Anyone got any tips or how they stopped or something to fight the urge?

TIA

610151 2007-11-10 07:26:00 You have to knock pissing up on the head for a while. Otherwise you will one of those buggers who scrounge smokes when they are drinking. You will have met these people before, they say they only smoke when they are drinking.
If smoke only when you drink later when you get the urge to smoke you will have to go down to the pub so you can have a smoke.
Its a matter of degree the more you get pissed the worst the urge will become and the less control you have. You know piss in brains out.
Basicaly the stats are against you giving up in your 20s and 30s but later in life after unrepairable damage has been done people quit.
If you can piss up and not smoke you will have it cracked for life.
I am not anti drinking I cherish my memories when I was pissed as a chook.
The saddest people I see are non drinkers never met a really happy tetotaller yet.

Without sounding self-righteous, I gave up for one simple reason.

I wanted to.

I did it for me. Not for others. Not because of a tv ad. Not because of external pressures.

People I know that have given up all agree on one thing. YOU have to want to.

If you do.

Then you will.

Depends how bad you want it.

It ain't meant to be easy. Make your place a no-smoking zone for starters. If your mates are your mates, you won't have any problems.

I screwed up by starting again. In a stressful situation with a friend who smoked, I figured "one wouldn't hurt" a couple of times......

610153 2007-11-10 07:39:00 Spend the smoking money on something aesthetically pleasing and morally uplifting, like beer. That way you have no smoking $$, so it's easy. Spend the beer money that you now have left on something worthwhile, like model helicopters, or trucks, and you will find that the urge for more power etc. will keep the smoke budget out of harms way.
Best to avoid walking past poultry or pig farms, the new-found nose sensitivities might surprise you a bit.
When you explain to SWMBO that you have not only given up smoking, you don't spend beer money any more; there is a fair chance you will get away with the model expenditure for 20 minutes or so.
What you do about the increased apetite and weight gain is up to you.

610154 2007-11-10 07:55:00 I found the "reward" smokes the hardest to give up - the smoke after a meal especially. Once I stopped them, I was well on my way.

Giving up during a break in routine is supposed to be good too - like when away on holiday.

Yup thats when Im feeling the urge.

After having a beer without smoking, I found it great not waking up with a head ache or ashtray mouth....makes me not want to no more, as Dean said its after a meal, or in the afternoon after a hard days work...

610156 2007-11-10 08:03:00 You have not had a smoke for 840+ hours. You are ALMOST getting your taste & smell senses back. Tomorrow morning, first thing, concentrate on the different smells in the air around you. The first mouth full of food chew thoroughly & identify the different flavours. They will be improving. Coughing your heart out & watching all that yellow phlegm going down the plug hole should be also be decreasing. Try not to think that just ''one little smoke'' won't hurt me, when you are having a jug down at the local watering hole. Eye sight will also be improving. Wallet will be looking healthier as well.
I could go on, but i will leave other members of the group to give some of their own personal experiences. 'rob on g' badly wants help!!!
