With backups, there's nothing like redundancy.

Europe yeah sure, I'd take a big camera. I think I'd be gutted if I took the big camera and it got stolen along with all the photos I'd taken.

Unzip? Razor cut more likely, I've friends that got done like that at a tube station in the crush when 1 of the gang fell in front of them. The other dodge was a bucket of slops from on high, when the back pack was taken off someone at ground level ran past and grabbed it.

If something unusual happens your first thought should be that someone (you) could be getting robbed. One reason not to have just 1 huge memory card unless you can download it regularly.

The low light thing does sound like an issue, but I'm not sure what indoor shots I'll be taking. Mostly outdoor stuff like Machu Picchu, waterfalls etc are my interests.

Here is an offer you won't be able to refuse....

Pay all my costs and I will come along and guard your back.. If anyone has a go at you I will give them a whack with my walking stick!!

610299 2007-11-15 07:29:00 If you do decide to carry your camera gear on your front, my son has a waist pack for SLRs and associated gear that can be carried on the front. I think it is made by Lowe and he swears by it. It looks a bit funny, but it is quite rigid, and it means that you can swap lenses and things and just put them in the front pack instead of taking your pack off, or putting the lens down on a flat surface where it can get forgotten. It is well padded etc.

It is similar to this one, but not identical: www.lowepro.com

Yeah that looks awesome. I'd have the clip under the sweatshirt or something so they couldn't unclip it easily. Then you could put you wallet n passport in it. If it's in front of you it's easier to watch than behind, and less easy for pick-pocketers to get at it.

No, just in case you lose your image files while travelling. Then at least you've got whatever you've sent home at that point.

So, you'd spend thousands on an overseas trip and up to $1k on a camera - but not back up your images regularly? The thing about digital images is you fill up your memory cards regularly so you need to transfer them to something - like CDs or DVDs. So may as well mail them home to yourself as it is a good backup system.

How did you manage your digital image files on your last overseas trip, Cicero?
