609909 2008-05-12 04:00:00 now, just a thought that sprung to mind: would a viable alternative lower petrol/oil prices? i mea, it would lower demand, and the oil companies would want to lower their prices to compete with the new technology if they can't buy it out . . . .

Now you're making me think too . . . . . . NOPE!

I don't believe that "finding" a new fuel would drive the prices of oil products down much if anyl

Why not? Oil is not a price-as-demand-rises item . The Arabs aren't going to want to lose the lifestyle they are used to and likely would instead just raise the price more to compensate for lost volume . OPEC is in a price gouging mode and they have good reason . . . they are running outta dinosaur juice and they know it .

It will fall on the necks of those who cannot for financial reasons, afford a vehicle that could run on the "new" fuel . . . . leaving the new vehicles with their new fuels to the movie stars, politicians and preachers .

I am also amazed at the sheer number of "people" who think that plugging a car into a home receptacle for electricity is in some way helping the planet .

Every form-change of energy is a loss and do these same green tree-huggers think there are a lot of crickets creating electricity by rubbing their legs together down at Power Central?

Ennyway . . . the fact that there is a new fuel on the horizon was expostulated upon last week and not here . . . but it seems as though the two are merging .

If you generate power via "coal" in a modern coal fired power station, it is roughly half the output of greenhouse gases per kilometer oppsed to just burning petrol in a normal combustion engine . This takes into account loss of power during trransmission etc .

609911 2008-05-12 08:19:00 I see on tonites TV news that Big Pricks (BP) is first out of the gate with another 5c / liter price rise.. paulw (1826)

very true

plus in NZ we don't burn oil for electricity, and don't burn anywhere near as much coal (aA a percentage of production) as you guys do... but i did hear that for 65 days straight this summer our wind farms produced exactly zero net power, causing huntly coal station to run flat out for sme time

though i hear that if we divert our coal exports and use that to make synthetic fuels petrol would be cheaper, under our own control (not likely to go up every time a war starts), and last us a few hundred years no hassles.... if the greens would let us do it that is!

i saw on the news today the aluminium smelter is threatening to leave NZ if the new carbon trading BS goes through into law. that's several thousand jobs lost, and the best/brightest will leave along with the smelters who will just go over to china and pollute even more than they do over here:groan:

but on the bright side it should help our power shortages

way to go, labour/greens!

609913 2008-05-12 12:15:00 to be honest i'd rather they bought back steam engines. and modernized the way the water is boiled into steam *then* it would be clean and water is cheap (free so far) plus doesnt require as much power if you use ultrasounds to boil the water williamF (115)
609914 2008-05-12 12:18:00 what?

ultrasound boiling water? the energy required to make the sound to boil it somehow being free?

free water?

609915 2008-05-12 12:22:00 alternator/lead acid batt combo? spose it'd be imposible so commit me for being insane then williamF (115)
609916 2008-05-12 12:29:00 what? wtf?! what would you do with an alternator and lead acid battery? and how would that get ultrasonic waves to boil water?! motorbyclist (188)
609917 2008-05-12 12:31:00 mah just ignore those posts then. :annoyed: williamF (115)
