610188 2008-02-13 23:48:00 Without sounding self-righteous, I gave up for one simple reason.

I wanted to.

I did it for me. Not for others. Not because of a tv ad. Not because of external pressures.

People I know that have given up all agree on one thing. YOU have to want to.

If you do.

Then you will.

Depends how bad you want it.

It ain't meant to be easy. Make your place a no-smoking zone for starters. If your mates are your mates, you won't have any problems.

I screwed up by starting again. In a stressful situation with a friend who smoked, I figured "one wouldn't hurt" a couple of times......

Allblack, you have cracked it! My experience also. That is the reason, because you want to. No one else can tell you to do so.

Giving up is easy. I gave up so many times. Staying off it altogether is the hard part - a different proposition.

All that you see on TV etc telling you how bad it is for you is true, but not necessarily relevant to you.

But really, I needed a good reason and it needed to be my reason. That's why it worked and I have been off the dreaded weed for many years now.:D

You too, need to find a very good important (to you) motive to renounce your evil habit. Besides, apart from the damage it does, how the hell can you afford it?

I have done that quite a few times now.

610190 2008-02-14 01:42:00 Well Im still smoke free, just wanted to ask if anybody noticed they get sick more often when they stop??

Yup .

Started getting bad chest colds, and generally caught more bugs and crap after I gave up than I ever had smoking .

And after about four months, I was in hospital .

Came out (which is something to be grateful for in itself ) as an asthmatic .

Apparently the asthma 'bug' is often dormant, and giving up smoking can often bring it to life .

Personally, I thought this was a crock, but after some checking it seems it was a reasonable diagnosis .

So that was a positive . Happy with that .

610191 2008-02-14 01:52:00 I found it took around a couple of years for my system to sort its self out. Lots of chesty phlegm coughing and food tasted awful for quite a long time.

I smoked about 30 years mainly around 40/day. As it was said, I wanted to stop and from that point on it was easy. (Well, sort of!!). I have been off them since 1988. There are times, maybe once a year, when I would crawl over half a mile of broken glass for one. Only the fact that I have been off them for so long stops me.

I didnt really have a reason . Just felt like it . I guess baby on the way helps too, dont want nicotine on my fingers when I pick her up .

610193 2008-02-14 08:04:00 I have smoked for over 60 years and have never tried to or wanted to stop.
I am currently going through 50 a day and have never had an illness that can be attributed to smoking.

The only reason I consider valid for not smoking is the money involved. But then the tobacco money would be spent on something else.

In fact the whinging anti-smoking wowsers are saving me money. I no longer fly in non smoking aircraft. or eat in restraunts.

The only problem I have is getting rid of the ash in my keyboard.

You know what they say about second hand smoke - just as bad. You want your baby to start smoking from birth?

Sounds like a good reason to me. That is similar to the reason that I gave up - I thought that telling my girls not to smoke when I did, was hypocritical, and let's face it, you really don't want them smoking, do you?

One very big point that smokers don't realise (until they give up) is the stink! You have no idea how badly you smell and it is not just your breath. It is your hair, your clothes, your house, everything!

It is very easy to tell a smoker just by their smell. And it does not go away just because you are not smoking at the moment.

Not too certain which is worse, the smell of a smoker or the smell of a smoker's car or house. All are bad!

Not trying to cause offence, just pointing out the truth. I was not aware how much I stank until I gave up.

Added benefit: SWMBO was very pleased. Need to amass as many brownie points as you can in a marriage!:)

50 a day! Wow!

I think smoking does cop alot of crap though, I mean smoking causes cancer? Wouldn't we have found a cure for it if smoking was the culprit?

The funny thing I find is I like the smell of cigerettes while they are being smoked. Just dont like the ashtray.
