610245 2007-11-11 18:52:00 Canon Powershot A 710 IS best compact camera according to Consumer Mag.
They use to be about the $600 $700 mark. DSE have it at $399 on special. Must a new model coming out.
:)

The A710IS suffers from time lags with shutter, flash, and between shots. This is probably due to only having 2 AA batteries instead of 4, as in other Powershots. Some users report time lags between 4 and 10 seconds; using a high speed good quality SD card may help. The LCD screen is not too good in bright daylight.

It does have IS, a great zoom and an optical viewfinder and overall its a good camera but the time lag would drive me nuts.

Best compact
Model: Canon Powershot A710IS
Price: $579
Good points: Good auto and manual image quality. Easy to use. Good movie quality for a digital camera with 60 fps. Lightweight and versatile with very good battery life. 7.1MP and x6 optical zoom. Good range of metering and exposure settings and manual focus.
But: Poor viewfinder quality
No LCD screens are good in bright daylight.

No mention of that here from Consumer.

Consumer are very lax in omitting this from their review as it can be quite an annoyance. The Boss missed out on a really good 4WD action shot last weekend because the flash went off unexpectedly and by the time the camera was ready to take another the opportunity was lost. :(

Apart from that it is a very good camera and I especially like the image stabilisation. That truly is amazing and I wouldn't have a camera without it now.

Consumer use the term "we" a lot when describing how the testing is done but the reality is that "Our test was a joint international consumer test, conducted by a laboratory in Europe . " The results get condensed into marks out of 10

Use their recommendations as a filter then read a more comprehensive test on a site like DPReview where each camera gets around 10-12 web pages of results that allow you to see why they make their recommendation .

610251 2007-11-12 05:13:00 Seriously, einfo.co.nz have some of the best deals around. I just bought a FujiFilm S5700 (Don't think its high enough to match your specs) but it cost me $319 while everyone else was $330+ or in some cases, $450+.
I note that the S5700 can take two cards including the xD,which my S5600 can't.

610252 2007-11-12 06:20:00 Lorcan - I'd seriously consider two cameras if you are traveling. One small pocket cam such as the Canon Ixus, and a larger one for more composed shots. My own experience is that you'll find a small camera easy to carry anywhere, quick to use, and ultimately more useful than a larger one.

Forget about high megapixels, long zooms. For most photography 5 - 7meg is plenty as is 4 - 6x zoom. Remember that with software, photos can be manipulated very easily including zooming and cropping.

610253 2007-11-12 06:49:00 Lorcan, I'd stay away from the Nikon Coolpix cameras. Nikon SLR's are tops but Canon will beat the Coolpix no problem. Johcar recommends reading the reviews at http://www.dpreview.com/ and I agree; there are other comparisons, other reviews so google the camera you want to buy before making the purchase.
I'm kinda set on the G9 at this stage. I have read the review here (www.dpreview.com) and it does appear better than the Nikon. It has the RAW mode which is a bonus. Unless there's a better model someone would like to recommend? Olympus? Kodak? etc?

Pricespy (www.pricespy.co.nz) has it for $819.00. Can someone recommend a better place, or a better model?
