And why would they be interested in seeing their competitor succeed? That'd be like Microsoft saying "Well, Linux is free and has better security, plus think of the price people will save when they buy a PC. Shucks we'd better just give in now...", aint gonna happen! | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||

Coal liquification was very easily done as stated in WW-II by the Germans and proved to be a very viable alternative to their lack of petroleum . They even had diesel engines in aircraft . . . . running on coal-derived diesel fuel . . . which by the way was very good! What's wrong right now is the political arm twisting by the petroleum industries that won't let coal be considered as a fuel . Why not? Simple greed and avarice by the oil sheiks . . . Bush and whoever it is in the UK at the moment . They also have the eco-idiots all running around with their doomsday hats on and trying to get the rest of the world to rally to their false god . . . ECOLOGY AT ALL COSTS - to all living things! With people who write books (An Unpleasant Truth) in which we have such "expert" technologists who will not even consider nuclear energy, then it's lemmings to the seashore . Nuclear energy is clean, produces no smog or carbon footprint and is in the end rendered to just a small amount of very highly concentrated waste . Notwithstanding the "scare" tactics of the greenies and earthers . . . who really don't have a point here . . . nuc is the way to go to perform all the miracles they want in the formation of greenhouse gasses and thermal damage to the biozone . I learned something a long time ago . . . "You can cut a man's legs off but you had better leave him some crutches" . Gore and the knee-jerks don't leave us any crutches at all . <Emphasis on the work "jerks" there> What they fear is that they'll be shown as simpletons one-sided, ill-conceived opinions that will then be shown to be totally incorrect . When the earth still continues warming and the ice/snow still melts after the carbon footprint and emissions are minimized back to the antediluvian condition, the earth will still be want to do in it's normal-thermal-cycle-thing anyway . No . . . they will lose their smirks and "told-you-so's" when things don't change and they have beaten us all back to an agrarian society and into what will be globiosocial suicide . <I'll bet your spellcheck goes crazy on that word . . . which is good because I made it up just now!> I absolutely believe that man is making a small . . . very . . . SMALL . . . footprint on the earth . There is no doubt that man is causing a teeny percentage of the effect we see . . . but there are much more sinister and natural forces at work here . Go to vast amounts of coal liquification or massively more nuclear energy plants and the earth will still get hotter or colder all by itself . Totally eschew petroleum and you're still gonna have polar bears swimming to New York, penguins moving to Perth . But first . . . . go to coal and get the Arabs and the Bush cronies off our backs! |

Only problem is to seperate the hydrogen from the water takes as much electrical power as the energy content of the hydrogen. Ok if you had nuclear or lots of wind power but hugely ineffecient. C1 |

| 609876 | 2007-11-10 23:44:00 | The world's abundance of coal would be a very good source of energy. Coal liquification was very easily done as stated in WW-II by the GermansAnd as also said, by the South Africans. I actually worked briefly on their second coal-to-petroleum site - Sasol 2. At the time it was the largest construction site in the world... virtually a small city. | Greg (193) | ||
| 609877 | 2007-11-11 01:23:00 | The South Island of New Zealand is full of coal so if we could economically make oil out of it, we are made. If not, you could always fire up the boiler with it :p | dolby digital (5073) | ||
| 609878 | 2007-11-11 03:18:00 | The Greenies' would never allow any more coal fired plants, just as they are with everything else that we have plenty of, water, wind, ocean currents and uranium on the West Coast as well. With Global warming, has anyone thought how al of those hydrogen and atomic explosions have acted as a Retro force and placed our planet off scew, they use small retro rockets in space to make small adjustmets any larger and they would finish up in outer/outer space. lurks. |
