610315 2007-11-16 07:43:00 Goodness Misty, I didn't read those reviews when I posted the link. Mine worked perfectly. I suppose I just trusted that the pix were on the iPod and left it at that. And of course I carried an iPod charger with me, so there was no worry about draining the battery. I wonder if those people who had problems didn't have a fully charged iPod before they started copying?
I am a fanatic about reading reviews - have learnt heaps that way. Cautious by nature - that's me (that's why I am not a millionaire :annoyed: )
You may well be right about them not charging. I remember reading reviews about iTrip before I bought one - some people had given up very easily or done obvious stupid things then blamed the equipment - so could be the same again !

Perhaps an internet cafe would let you download your camera card onto their harddrive and then upload to a USB pendrive? The ones I went to had no problems with me using a USB pendrive, and they didn't know what I was doing with it. Perhaps that is an alternative backup solution, provided your USB key was big enough to take your images. My present one is 8Gb, and each of my pix is about 1.2 Mb, so you could fit a lot of images on an 8Gb drive! All you would need to carry is your camera's USB cable and a pendrive.
Sounds good John

610316 2007-11-16 16:15:00 I have 1.75 gig of cards,which was ample for a 9 week trip,that was taking all I wanted,hundreds of pics at 5 meg.

And if per chance I had lost the lot, life would have gone on.

No doubt all yours are classics and will end up in Turnbull collection.

Sorry I forgot,I also had a 4 gig usb drive.

610317 2007-11-16 20:41:00 Mem cards are so cheap .. but get portable HDDs?
Unless you shoot lots like 500MB a day.

2GB $100.
No PHD to carry and no cables to take, for insurance you could always get 2x 2GB instead of 1x 4GB. These days.

No need to worry if your room get broke into, or bag snatched, the memory is so small you could put it in a traveller wallet - under the clothes around the waist or such. You can walk out with just one camera (whatever size) and that is it.

Nice, that will be perfect for South America. Thanks for the link!

610320 2007-11-21 07:37:00 Got the G9 today. Was $725 all up incl delivery and Toshiba 2GB SD card (class 4). Damn good deal seeing they are $960 in stores. They have RTB 1yr warranty as well and because I used my Freestyle Mastercard I get 2yr warranty. Woohoo for parallel importers.

If I get into photography later on I might splash out on one of the middle range D-SLRs rather than going entry level. And I don't feel comfortable taking an expensive D-SLR around South America, so the G9 will be manageable and transportable.

I'm no pro photographer and I've been shooting with crappy 2mp cameras until now. Macro mode doesn't seem to be too bad. Here's a shot (www.photopile.com) using RAW mode, I've just cropped it and converted to PNG. It's still at 100% so massive (6.15MB). Or here's the 50% version (www.photopile.com) (1.6MB). I'm pretty happy with that. I'll try a few outside harbour view shots tomorrow if it's nice.

610322 2007-11-22 01:15:00 I've often wondered what do people do with all these pictures they take. And how often are they looked at.
To me it seems stupid to spend thousands of dollars on cameras and memory cards. Have you ever worked out how much each "keepable" picture costs?

Your question has some merit, but then one might ask why spend thousands of $ pretending to fly an aeroplane?
