| 610750 | 2007-11-12 02:46:00 | What are your experiences/opinions with how this country handles the sickness benefit? My partner recently was diagnosed with a strange stomach problem, and she is absolutely nauseous all day and unable to work because of it. It will take 2-3 months to come right. She went into WINZ today to apply for the sickness benefit to help her out until she can work again. She made the big mistake of telling the truth to WINZ, she said she has a partner. WINZ expect me to totally support her now on my wages alone paying for her rent at her house as well as doctor bills ect. We are 20 years old. Ive got bills of my own as well as my own rent. We are both full time workers, tax paying citizens, but get treated like nothing. You have to break the law to actually get help from these bastards. All in all, I think it is absolutely hopeless. Lazy bastards go on the sickness benefit for years they just tell their doctor they have depression or hurt their back slightly deeming their body useless for ever and that entitles them to free money. Yet a young couple, who have both been working full time for a couple of years, cant get helped out for a couple of months while one is unable to work. They have taken a decent idea, and made it totally useless to the people who actually need it. I hate New Zealand. |

One appreciates your point of view, but I would look further into you having to pay for someone you don't even live with . |

If you are actually married, that may be a different story, of course... If she is your girlfriend & called herself your partner, perhaps that led to a misunderstanding? Hve you actually checked this out with WINZ yourself before sounding off here? As this was a "today" visit, that seems unlikely. |

| 610755 | 2007-11-12 08:32:00 | First - go to your local Citizens Advice Bureau and ask about beneficiary advocates - like the beneficiaries union. Or a Salvation Army or St Vincent de Paul social worker will be able to point you somewhere that can give you good, free advice on benefit issues and help advocate your case to WINZ. If all else fails, make sure that WINZ issues a decision and you can have that decision reviewed. The letter that contains the decision will give information about the steps to take to review a decision. |

| 610757 | 2007-11-12 08:56:00 | And by the time the review of the case has been completed, you will both have a large overdraft with the bank and you partner/friend will be fully recovered and back at work . I'm still waiting for an ACC top up to the estimated payments they made to me in July through to September!! OK, not the same agency, but the same mindset . . . . |
