609859 2007-11-09 17:18:00 With Oil prices inching towards $100/Barrel....Cant we make artificial Crude oil used for Gas/petrol ?

With all the technical expertise in the world why cant Crude oil or Petrol for that matter be made artificially instead of having to dig the earth ???

Is it as hard as attachiing somes head back to their body or what ?

If you can make crude oil artificially for less than US$100/barrel, then I'm sure there'd be a lot of companies who will be bending over backwards to hire you.

609861 2007-11-09 19:24:00 Even better, You would have to compete with the cost of sourcing it, not selling it, and people in "the know" still claim the real cost is $5 a barrel and the oil producers are reveling in the hype, using it to drive up profits.

Either way, The oil companies bring in billions every year, and the government steals its cut as well.

609862 2007-11-09 20:31:00 The Germans made an artificial fuel during WW11.
We were not able to replicate it though as the recipe was lost forever.
Ethanol is not the answer either as it has such a bad track record for bad mileage. Making fuel from corn just pushes up the price for foodstuffs and creates shortages.
It looks to me like we are stuck with fossil fuels.
Countries had better start digging for oil. d

It no secret South Africa still gets 3/4 of its petrol /desiel from coal exactly as the Germand did it. They didnt have a choice as the there was a UN embargo on them for because of the Dutch speakers not allowing 1 man 1 vote in SA.
The process was invented in the early 20. Its high school chemistry stuff not rocket sceince. Coal is a hydrocarbon just oil from the same period made from plant material and the occasional dead dinosaur I suppose.
I hope the price of crude quadruples and more until people will think twice about using their cars. At about 300 a barrel it will just be economic to make biodesiel and ethanol suitable for some engines.

609864 2007-11-09 21:51:00 Electric motorcycles.

High speed trains between towns.

No need for everyone to be driving pollution spewing 2-ton chucks of scrap iron down the shop to buy milk.

And get rid of air travel, Slow the pace of life down.

What kind of mileage do they get?
How much does it cost?

Thanks,

Mileage is same because the petrol and desiel is the same.
From peat to natural gas just a case of time.
Not sure of price of petrol in SA even if its subsidised.
When barrel of crude was 20 dollars it wasnt economic but it is now.
The plant that makes it is the biggest single point polluter of co2 in the world.
Its not an option for the western world.
I think you are getting confused with ethanol which by volume dosent have have as much energy in it. In usa the production of corn ethanol to the pumps uses more energy than what is in the fuel. Just imagine the tractors which do the work on the land and the fertilizer are using fossil fuels. The tractors and trucks which take it away are using deseil. The electrical energy used in production is from coal powered generators.
Its only a goer because the dumb yanks yes the same yanks that are still in Iraq longer than they were in ww2 are subsidising it to 50 cents an us gallon.
It also puts up the price of food as cockies sell their soy and corn to the ethanol plants.
