I bet that has baffled you lot, and pricked Surfer Joes ears up

Some of my Ancestors owned plantations and stores in America (although i don't believe they ever lived there), before an American named George started a war that ended disastrously! (well for my ancestors at least), what i want to find out is whether they sold the properties before the Revolution or if they lost he properties in the war, i do know that as a result of the war the family bank based in Glasgow (along with about 70 other banks) went under

Would such records still exist?, i have no documentary evidence apart from info from family genealogists (one is from San Jose I believe) and an ocasional mention in the pre-war Virginia Gazette

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Let me in on who your ancestors were, country of origin and such . . . and I can help . . there are banks of info for people about repatriations, remunerations and repayments for crimes against them if they weren't actually spoils of war or taken from people who were found to be a Tory sympathizer, spies or agents for the Crown or had a pair of red pants and a red coat and a BSA musket in the closet .

There are quite a few societies here that have this sortta info for you . . .

I lived around colonial Gettysburg and also Jamestown VA . . and have a goodly amount of interest in the area too .

One of the very BEST US historians was a comedian called "Charlie Weaver" who has since long passed away, but his notes and records are still being read and deciphered and land-grants and grant deeds are still in the records . . . . maybe you are a land owner in VA or own Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco .

I claim a very small finders fee .

608731 2007-11-06 01:42:00 Hmmmm That would be nice but i doubt it, also unfortunatly my ancestor had a relatively common name, well for a Scots man at least

Andrew Thomson - was the principal partner in Thomson, Snodgrass & Co.-Virginia merchants. Had 2 stores; one at Richmond Virginia and one at Mattox on the Potomac in Goochland Cty., Virginia
--I have found mention of the Mattox store in the Virginia Gazette from 1771, but nothing about the other one

The other firm he was part of that had American properties (possible) was McCall, Smellie and Co in fact Andrew Thomson Married Samuel McCalls Daughter Helen, so anything for Samuel Mccall would be of interest

First 2 pics are Andrew and Helen (nigel.geek.nz)

I have a bit more info to elaborate on the above, but there were so many andrew, george and helen thomsons in my family history, three consequtive generation married women named helen and had daughters named helen, that i have trouble finding the info

I've seen these two people around Hemet . . . I'll try to find them and get a pix or two back to you .

Old people come here to retire and their parents move in down the road in Sun City to Leisure World . . . . . but I call it "Seizure World" .

Can I type your name again?

Nigel . .

Thanks . . . that was fun .

Hi Bantu, thanks for that there are a few sites there i haven't yet visited, i know my family history back to the 1640s, it's more a case of finding information about them, fleshing out who they were etc, in fact rootsweb is where i made contact with the people who have given me a tonne of family history,

The main reason i ask about the US side of things is that most boards in the US are asking about ancestors in Europe and I am finding it difficult to find any info on the pre-revoloutionary period the only site i found was the colonial Williamsburg (research.history.org) site which had the Virgina Gazette which mentioned various companies my family were affiliated with

608737 2007-11-06 02:34:00 Lucky you, Nigel, to have such great old pix.

None of mine go back nearly as far...

I'm intrigued about your layout.
Does it come with a particular genealogy programme or is that part of a website you've set up yourself?

I have some limited experience with Legacy & Genes Reunited, but merely played around the edges of their options as yet.

I know what you mean about duplicate names down the generations.
One of my branches also has Helen/Ellen/Nellie/Nell in quantities.
Another called the first son Samuel for several generations - which is confusing enough, but 2 of them married Elizas & named daughters that also.

608738 2007-11-06 02:41:00 OK..Nigel..I'll tell

My sister had a book by John Lennon..."In His Own Write" and it had the following chapters:

Partly Dave, No Flies on Frank, Good Dog Nigel, At the Denis, The Fat Growth on Eric Hearble, The Wrestling Dog, Randolf's Party, The Famous Five through Woenow Abbey, Sad Michael, I Wandered, A Letter, Scene three Act one, Treasure Ivan, All Abord Speeching, The Fingletoad Resort of Teddiviscious, Alec Speaking, Liddypool, You Might Well Arsk, Nicely Nicely Clive, Neville Club, The Moldy Moldy Man, On Safairy with Whide Hunter (written in conjugal with Paul), I Sat Belonely, Henry and Harry, Deaf Ted - Danoota (and me), A Surprise for Little Bobby, Halbut Returb, Unhappy Frank, On this Churly Morn, Victor Triumphs Again and Mrs. Weatherby Learns a Lesson, I Remember Arnold.

She got it autographed in Shea Stadium when she met John Lennon and he wrote his name on that page.... the one about the dog Nigel...that's all.
