775161 2009-05-19 22:17:00 Hi,

I looking for a way to set defrag to run automatically when a pc is idle on several clients pc's. Im sure its not difficult but I cant for the life of me get a workable solution.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers, pete

775162 2009-05-19 22:31:00 What OS(es)? Do you want to just use the Windows Defrag or are you happy using a 3rd party (read: better) defrag tool? I would just write a batch file & use windows task scheduler. inphinity (7274)

775164 2009-05-19 23:00:00 If you are using Vista as your OS then it has scheduling as part of the defrag utility Nictech (14748)
775165 2009-05-19 23:02:00 I dont mind a third party app. I would prefer something that runs in the background.

OS's are mainly XP with a couple of 2000 PCs still kicking around in the warehouse.

775166 2009-05-20 02:13:00 Just remember if you Defrag all the time you really shorten the life of the hdd when the head gets all worn out.

Depending of applications and broken- un-CCleaner'd files in there you may only want to do this sporadically.

Try Diskeeper09, works very well in the background.

775168 2009-05-20 22:38:00 I use the screensaver version of JKDefrag - it run as a normal screensaver until complete, and them plays any other screensaver of your choice. nofam (9009)

I'm not sure that running defrag while a PC is idle is a good idea as there may be programs and files running or open at that time. Programs and files should not be running or open when defragging. You wouldn't change the oil in your car when the engine was running, would you?
