775567 2009-05-21 21:38:00 +1.

The mobo will never be acceptable from now on in if it has bulging cap troubles. I am guessing that board is about 6-7 yrs old?

I had the bad cap problem here and replaced three caps about three years ago. The mobo is still going so the 'borrowed time' has been pretty good!

775568 2009-05-22 04:07:00 Update:
wainuitech was correct. I tried another hard drive today and have restarted, shut down and rebooted completely successfully. It has stayed running pretty much indefinitely (or at least for several hours this afternoon].
As the hdd passed diagnostics, I am leaning toward a reformat. What do you think?

Thank you

775570 2009-05-22 04:21:00 but just to throw a spanner in the works....

if its got cap problems changing anything that draws power can change how the pc runs.
i've had mobo's with 5-6 blown caps and windows installed and ran fine.....for a while.
typically boot up is the most stressful time for the powersupply side of things.
change the power requirements or even slow down loading speed can lower the stress and it will boot and run fine.

i would be inclined to stress test the pc fairly hard and see what happens.

775571 2009-05-22 04:24:00 Good suggestion - something else under stress :) NZHawk (4093)
775572 2009-05-22 04:33:00 Good suggestion - something else under stress :) Something or someone ???:D even with a different HDD, I'd still expect troubles in the near future, the Caps bludging is never a good sign.

As for stress levels 1= None 10=Call the loony bin

775573 2009-05-22 04:39:00 I used to run a net cafe a few years back.... Yes this is relevant. :clap

Bulging caps are a big issue, it will affect your power distribution through the computer, now replacing the hard drive has fixed it but the root cause of the issue could be that bulging power supply. I'd watch that closely if i were you, well if i were you I think i'd just go get a new Motherboard. Or, if your good with electronics you can replace your cap's on your motherboard, it does work but you have to have a steady arm and watch your solder work carefully.

but thats me and i like to waste money!
