775717 2009-05-21 23:03:00 OK - I installed the new PSU and the voltages all came right back to where they oughta be . Hooray!

I want to run a scan from the WD hard drive manufacturer on the suspected WD hdd's and now something's going on I don't understand .

First, I removed any old copies of their Data Lifeguard Tools from the original installation of the hdd's a few years ago so I could make sure that I have an uncorrupted copy, fresh off the internet .

I download, unzip, read the EULA and say: "OK" to it all then install, and leave the box checked that says: "Run Diagnostics At Closing" and then another OK and all I get to see from that point on is my desktop .

I have shut off everything that is running, and as the WD Diagnostics says it will run under Windows/XP, I assume it should be going on .

The hdd light says things are happening, but then there's just the desktop staring at me -

. . . . . . and this has been going on for over an hour:

A busy hdd and a desktop .

That's all . Nichts!

I tried the TaskManager and I don't see much happening, but the CPU and RAM are very busy . There's nothing in the APPLICATIONS box and the PROCESSES shows an odd one or two (wdfmgr . exe ) but I'm over 80% on the CPU and PF is 'way down to 382MB and holding steady for a long time now .

Now - I have 8 of these hdds in the SOYO and I wonder why I cannot get to chose which hdd I want to scan as the . pdf file "Read Me" says it should offer as an option .

Any thoughts?

And - YES - I removed the downloaded version and tried the CD-ROM version and it's still doing the same thing .

PS: I tried to install it in different hdd's and even the <root/hdd> too . No diff .

wdfmgr.exe is part of WMP.

I would never run a diagnostic from within Windows.
Download the one you burn to disk and boot off if you think theres some problem with the drive.

775719 2009-05-22 00:47:00 OK . . . I'll try that now .

But is that so different from the Windows-based CHKDSK?
