I'm looking to buy a new HDD for a HP DC7700 (Sata - 3/Mbps)

I've heard some bad press about the Seagates - that they're more prone to failure than other brands - so can anyone recommend a good performing reliable brand?

775581 2009-05-21 02:14:00 The only prob seagates had were the firmware needed to be updated to fix some (not all of them) Speedy Gonzales (78)
775582 2009-05-21 02:25:00 Seagate or Western Digital.
Get a Black Edition WD preferably as they have a 5 year warranty.

x2... I don't like the green WD drives...

99% of the Seagate drives that had the dodgy SD15 firmware have been sold/updated, so you are very unlikely to run into any issues. Seagate fixed the issue at their end long ago, its just the drives that are still trickling through the lower level distributors that you might run into, I havn't seen any for over 4 months.

The Green series are meant for HTPCs or something like that as they dynamically adjust the speed of the discs - So they don't run at 7200rpm all the time.
This is to be more energy efficient & quieter.

775586 2009-05-21 04:57:00 I use a green wd 500gb for back ups and it is noticabley quiter and cooler
it only runs at 5400rpm tho, but probably not recommended if you are after performance
Edit: friend brought a blue wd 500gb for his hdpc and you can hear the hdd running, he is not happy and i wouldnt be either
I brought some 1tb seagates from Ascent with 5 years warranty last year, they have all performed 100%. When i heard about the failing drives i swore i was never gonna buy a nother seagate, but none i have have failed. Seagates or Wd for me

775587 2009-05-21 17:54:00 I have a WD Green 640GB, another WD 500GB, a Hitachi 160 GB (T7K) and one of the newer Hitachi 500GBs in the system currently. There were 2 Seagate 7200.11 500GBs in there, but they are dead now (the infamous firmware problem I guess) and due for replacement under warranty.

I'd say go with the WD or Hitachi...I've had good experiences with both. The Green runs nice and quiet..it's my OS drive and I don't notice much of a performance difference from the 'cuda 11s (one of which was my previous OS drive).

These days, you can't really go wrong with any of the brands...unless it's a Maxtor:p

775588 2009-05-21 22:35:00 Yeah, Seagate had a firmware issue (firmware update stops the issue, and they're doing data recovery & replacement under warranty afaik). Even so, I'd go Seagate or Western Digital (WD's Black or Raptor series). 5 year warranties and the best around for over a decade. inphinity (7274)

Maxtor is a brand of Seagate. Not sure if they come from the same factory though.
