| 611789 | 2007-11-15 07:22:00 | Xtra have been a real pain in the ass lately. When I help people set up their Xtra ADSL, their email doesn't work for the first day. The password is rejected by the bubble mail servers for the first day, but works fine the next day. Xtra don't seem to be able to do anything about it - when I ring them about it, they insist resetting the password will fix it & I always let them do it just in case, but it never does. If I ring back, they reset it again. I did that four times the first time I came across it before I gave up & discovered time is a miracle cure. I'm going to move in with someone who is on Xtra broadband in a few weeks. I'm considering paying their disconnection fee for them & moving to Xnet when I move in. |

Yet another problem with them contracting out their mail to Yahoo, and xtra not having any direct control from NZ. |

Apart from Xtra other ISPs have direct control over their mail servers and your email account. If you have a problem it can be sorted out very quickly. It is a lot easier to deal with your NZ ISP then to try and get a problem sorted out with a Hotmail or Yahoo mail account. |

On the contrary, many people on this forum have commented on their (or others) reluctance to change ISPs because that would normally result in a change of e-mail address. I now use gmail (and recommend that for anyone) and have never had a problem - it has POP & IMAP access as well. If you took a poll over who had problems and the ease of dealing with them, you will find a LOT more people p*ss*d off with Xtra/Yahoo than Gmail. And don't think I'm picking on Xtra, there are other people complaining about other NZ ISPs as well. |

| 611797 | 2007-11-18 03:40:00 | I wonder how many people on here ditched Xtra after the Yahoo fiasco. I know I did and a couple of mates did also. Because Kinect offered us all a good deal we gave them our telephone and tolls as well, so Telecom misses out to boot. The whole thing was a complete disaster (and still is it seems) but their arrogance defied belief. :( I shook my head at a news item last week where Trade Me were going crook because people were missing out on deals and they were getting the blame. Turned out it was an Xtra problem and when questioned the Spokeswoman advised that there were ONLY 15,000 customers effected. :eek: Unbelievable! |

The problem with gmail and other free email systems such as Yahoo(Xtra included) and hotmail, is that a lot of spammers also signup to use their email systems. This means that their spam protection systems are very strict, and a lot of legitimate email can be marked as spam. This is also a problem if you have your own domain name that is forwarding email to a free email account, as the free email provider can block incoming email that is forwarded from a domain. I have had this very problem with a domain that was forwarding from Freeparking, using their free email forwarding to a gmail email account. The emails either weren't delivered or went into my bulk bin. Try to ever get support from a free email provider. Some do reply, but you do pay for what you get in terms of getting the problem resolved. |
