1439196 2017-09-15 10:05:00 This is a purely hypothetical question for me as we are not going to see fibre until about 2022, but I wondered whether in the real world where there are many possible bottlenecks in delivering content, whether super fast fibre was in fact any better than say VDSL.

I have VDSL which delivers me Speedtest values of over 40Mbps down/9 Mbps up on a good day. Websites usually load pretty much instantaneously, but sometimes they don't. Downloads go pretty quickly but it still takes a while for a new Win10 Insider build to download. How much different would it be if I had fibre? One obvious difference would be the upload speed, I guess, but as I don't transmit vast amounts of data in practice that advantage is minimal.

What are people's experiences?

The other advantage of fibre is that it keeps you regular - but that is a whole other topic. :D

1439197 2017-09-15 11:40:00 I've been on it for a little while. With Vodafone.

Changed to 100/20 I think it is. I see the highest I've gone so far was in May. Nearly 150 GB lol.

Buggered if I know what that was for. I dont download movies. It may have been when I was playing online with the Xbox.

But besides that (now), I just update 3 computers, and a few mobiles. (and the Xbox updates).

But it's not too bad for what I get (about $95 a mth) 5 free bestmates, free tolls. Unlimited data. Was going to go on their mobile plans to get $10 off.

But nah, their plans are more complicated than Sparks

1439198 2017-09-15 12:27:00 It's possible that fibre could be cheaper than copper, in which case absolutely :D pcuser42 (130)
1439199 2017-09-15 12:46:00 I switched from a 45/10 VDSL to 100/20 fibre just because it's the same price and fibre has a lot of advantages that should make it more reliable in the long term.
The slower fibre plan was actually cheaper than VDSL but also slower, haven't checked plans recently to see if that's till true.

Do I notice the difference? not really. Some downloads that were already fast are a bit faster, but it's not like I sit around waiting for them.
I will stream Netflix or youtube while gaming online and occasionally also have a download running - no problem at all. But VDSL did that too.

1439200 2017-09-15 20:33:00 Given only Adsl was available to me absolutely yes it was better.

Also I find it much more stable that copper - would say there's been about 2 issues with it since it's gone in.

1439201 2017-09-15 20:48:00 whether super fast fibre was in fact any better than say VDSL.

So with copper, Chorus are losing interest.
As for fibre friend just got VDSL, they haven't actually done fibre there yet.
But she thought 70mbps on VDSL was good so why?

Well because:

VDSL Up to 70Mbps
FibreBASIC Up to 50Mbps**
Fibre 100 Up to 100Mbps
Fibre 200 Up to 200Mbps
Fibre MAX Up to 900Mbps

Some other ISPs say up to 1000Mbps for max speed.

At present max is a bit more expensive, but by the time you get it, I'd say they will all start doing the fast as you can get, like they did with ADSL.

I am on the 100 plan, it's fine, haven't noticed any variation in speed yet either, due to congestion, son is happy gaming, weekends he is on it, granddaughter on Youtube and MInecraft etc...

No outages, no modem problems, nothing at all....it's been fine. I get 104Mbps.

1439202 2017-09-15 21:14:00 I can certainly see that for gaming, streaming etc there would be advantages in the faster speed/lower ping (my ping is 40-50msec) and of course you are right about fibre being the way of the future, especially for commercial applications, but I'm not sure about for your average punter. Of course when it does get up into the Waitakeres I shall probably be right at the head of the queue. :) Tony (4941)
1439203 2017-09-15 21:17:00 You'll find locations In NZ are faster. If I bring through a ISO of Linux ( as an example) and use a NZ site its through in a few seconds, just brought through a 1.4GB ISO under 30 seconds (just did a speed test- mines on a go slow at the moment only tops out at just over 400Mbps, normally its 900).

Any data from outside of NZ you will still be restricted to what the max speed its coming from. If the sender is slow then you will receiving slow.

Over a period of time the phone line connections ( ADSL/VDSL) will be phased out as newer technology is more common and reliable. Was speaking to the guy from Chorus a while back and he mentioned the speeds we are getting now will be slow compared to whats coming. The lines at the moment are being held back, the ISP s are not allowed to "open the taps" as he said.

1439204 2017-09-15 21:38:00 We will never see fibre at this address or VDSL so have gone with 4G wireless which is working very well for us so far, we can watch TV on demand no problems. When we were on ADSL at the last place we couldn't often do that. gary67 (56)

I am an average punter now.
They might game, youtube and stuff, but I don't.

I care more about reliable and no congestion.

I got that.
Speed....well they're not complaining and thus I stayed with the 100mps plan.
