1438757 2017-09-03 05:50:00 My tech-challenged neighbour bought some external speakers for her laptop "because Windows 10 update messed up my sound" - her words not mine. The sound levels were still not good so she asked me for help. She fired up a Youtube video and the sound level was poor. I then pointed out that she had the sound slider all the way over to the left. Once we moved it, surprise surprise, the sound improved. :D

So she now has at least 3 different ways of controlling the sound levels on the laptop;

The volume +/- keys on the keyboard
The volume control on the speakers
The volume control on whatever video clip she is watching
anything else I have forgotten

My question is: what is the best combination of the above to get best sound quality?

1438759 2017-09-03 06:13:00 You are more likely to experience distortion if the speakers are set above about 70%, at least that's what I've found.
Software volume controls are unlikely to produce distortion unless they are 'overdriven',
like for example the volume control in VLC, which allows greater than 100%.

1438760 2017-09-03 06:37:00 Thanks peeps.

So volume on Youtube etc at 100%, on the external speakers at 60% and fine adjustment from the keyboard? How does that sound? (pardon the pun...)
