According to a dietitian of my acquaintance, "Absolutely".

1439208 2017-09-16 23:12:00 I don't stream, or do any media downloads other than a very rare torrent, so speed is just not a factor of any significance in my world.
It would be an odd month if my traffic went over 20GB, and would likely be due to a Steam purchase.

If it wasn't for steam, and all the cursed video, advertising and tracking bloatware fouling up the news sites I would probably be happy on dialup.

Now that vodafone have axed the email I will be looking for a cheaper plan. Slower speeds and/or lower caps would be fine for me.

Your comment is interesting because the common wisdom is that once people have access to the faster speeds they tend to use it. I don't think I need faster speeds either, but maybe if I did I'd stream more etc. It seems to me one of the big advantages of fibre is less congestion so a more consistent speed and fewer spinning circles - whatever you are doing.

Well I guess it depends why you have changed to a new broadband in the first place. I'd say most people do it because they download/stream movies and stuff in the first place.

I didn't and only did it because copper is on it's way out, they changed the pricing so that fibre wasn't more expensive.

So speed is good...but do I notice really? No. Son does of course.
However it is reliable, I've had zero issues of any kind at all. No variation in speed at any time, no dropouts, no anything, just consistency ever since.

Funnily enough friend who Netflixes etc has the old 30mbps fibre plan. Why I can't imagine, I have told her....but nope, she stays on it.....

1439211 2017-09-17 02:07:00 You've pretty much summed up the gist of this whole thread. Reasons to get fibre:

You are a gamer and/or major streamer/torrent freak
The only alternative is ADSL
It is probably more reliable and predictable
It may well be cheaper

Otherwise you might as well stick with VDSL.

Re the 30 mbit plan , I think if she runs a speed check she will find its been autoupgraded to 50. Chorus did this months ago. Though Vodafone was a bit slow in moving people over

The fact that copper is going to be obsolete sooner or later.....

1439214 2017-09-17 21:29:00 The fact that copper is going to be obsolete sooner or later.....Well yes, that is true for almost everyone, but doesn't mean you have no alternative today. Tony (4941)
1439215 2017-09-17 22:41:00 The copper ph lines down my street are unreliable, and I have a outage/reliability issue of some sort every year or so
So fibre would give me reliability . Unfortunately Ive still 2 more years to wait before I can get it.

As for speed, I almost never max out the old ADSL anyway . Theres allways a bottleneck somewhere else .
