1439007 2017-09-12 00:51:00 We are planning a South Island trip in our motorhome and were thinking of travelling Queen Charlotte Drive between Picton and Havelock.

Has anyone travelled that road and can you tell us is it a good way to go? On the map it looks a bit twisty turny.

We'd appreciate your comments.

1439008 2017-09-12 01:02:00 Well do you like the Rimutaka Hills? If so, you should be fine.

It's narrow and winding in places but all sealed but it does have some cool scenic views.....
I'd hate to do it in a motorhome but then that kind of thing makes me nervous even in a car.
Husband would............

1439009 2017-09-12 01:07:00 It is very scenic but is as you say 'twisty turny'
I think you should be OK in a motorhome, I have seen house-buses drive it.

1439010 2017-09-12 01:14:00 Yep no problem at all for a campervan, it does take about twice as long as going down Rapaura Road, but is very 'scenic'. If it's a rubbish day I wouldn't bother.

And I'm sure you would, but make sure you pull over and let anyone behind past! The last few times I've been down there I've been stuck behind some oblivious tourist in a camper going slower than a wet week, not paying any attention at all. Makes my blood boil....

1439011 2017-09-12 05:55:00 Thank you for your comments. Very grateful.

Our motorhome is not a big one. It is a high roofed Ford Transit so it's quite easy to drive. Even SWMBO has no problems.

I know what you mean, Wratterus. It can be very annoying going behind someone who thinks they are driving "safely".

So from your comments it seems as though we should give it a go. "Scenic" sounds great. Hopefully there are spots where we can pull over to enjoy the view.

Thank you for letting us know about the drive. Much obliged.

1439012 2017-09-12 06:06:00 Yes go for it the other route is boring as and could be really busy as a lot of the trucks have to use the first part of it. There are plenty of pull ins and a great spot for parking at Momorangi Bay as well as good food in both Picton and Havelock. If your heading further South and intending on visiting Hanmer Springs let me know, one word of advice though if you are avoid being here from Friday afternoon to Sunday evenings. There are fantastic mid week specials here and some days you can have a hot pool to yourself. gary67 (56)
1439013 2017-09-12 07:12:00 Never driven it...but you can get a time lapse from Foltz's street view player here (www.brianfolts.com). the images are merged, Just add start and end lat/long (by clicking, highlighting, and copying). coordinates from Google Maps. I have made a journey here (goo.gl) (shortened URL to map movie) from Picton to just past Cullen Point Lookout. Can speed up - the video - if you want.... kahawai chaser (3545)

1439015 2017-09-12 07:55:00 Go for it.
We are full time in our 7m cabover Canter truck based motorhome. We travelled both directions while exploring French Pass, Titirangi Bay etc. earlier this year. An easy road with spectacular scenery.

Thanks very much, Neville. Good to hear from someone who has driven it in a motorhome. If you find it no problem then we should be alright in our small motorhome.

Thanks to all for your comments. Much appreciated.
