1438587 2017-08-27 21:51:00 Just in the last week or so, Outlook 2007 (running on W7 Home 64 bit 8GB) has been very slow opening showiing as 'loading' for up to a full minute before becoming functional. In addition, opening a new email to send, a new calendar or contact item takes forever to open up. Everything, once it is open, functions normally but it is as though some other procerss has to complete before it will operate.

It functioned normally with NOD 32 email scanning enabled so I've ruled that out. I have skinned out thousands of saved emails but that made no difference either. I did download the microsoft packup program that I suspect may have something to do with it but I can't find any way to get rid of that now. Maybe a registry entry?

Any suggestions would be appreciated because I use Outlook a lot in my daily routine and having it perform like a geriatric with alzheimers is not really satisfactory.

Many thanks in advance.

Ah yes. My fingers have a mind of their own. Do you think that might be the problem? lol

It might mean that it is backing up all you many emails and those that have been deleted by you and not yet expunged from the system.

Do you have a recent system restore just before you installed the backup program? How would it be if you removed Outlook entirely, rebooted and then reinstalled Outlook without the Backup program? You would need to save the emails you wanted somehow.

1438591 2017-08-28 00:23:00 I Auto Archive most of my emails. I run the Auto Archive every 14 days and archive everything over 4 weeks old.
Note they are still available to view as I have the Archive folder appear in the Navigation Pane.

For those emails I want to keep I have a Keep folder with customized settings (Auto Archive turned off) and move any emails I want to keep into that folder

Note also I have Outlook set so that when I close Outlook I permanently delete all emails that I have deleted from my inbox and elsewhere.
Sometimes I will even Empty the Deleted Items Folder during the day

I average about 20-30 emails per day so quite a substantial number

1438592 2017-08-28 00:45:00 Thanks Bryan. I suspect you're right. I did read the link you suggested but the Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders Backup tool does not appear in either add/remove in control panel nor in Revo. I did use revo to "remove" the tool but there seems to be some residual activity which suggests to me that some component may remain (in registry?)

I'm reluctant to try a system restore because for some reason there are no restore points since 2013 although I am certain that I created some much more recently. I could do a reinstall and I could save the PST file to an extenal HDD but I have had problems in the past retrieving those files back into the fresh install of Outlook. The emails don't matter so much but the contacts and calendar items are more or less irreplaceable. It was for this reason that I installed the backup tool in the first place but it has proved to be less thaan useless. If I could be sure of retrieving the copy back into Outlook, I'd reinstall in a heartbeat.

Jedsdad: I too archive emails that I need to keep indefinitely but these are few and far between and the deleted folder gets emptied every couple of weeks, just in case something I think is dead gets resurrected! My inbox would usually get up to 50 or more per day so an empying of the deleted folder is commonly around 5-600 although since having this problem, I've been emptying it daily and that has made no difference.

1438593 2017-08-28 01:39:00 Delete the emails.
If you need the info, save the actual information into a file and save that.
If you need the contact, save the email address.

But delete the emails.

1438594 2017-08-28 02:06:00 Thanks pctek. Have done that but retained the email folders. Should those be deleted too? Blue Druid (4480)
1438595 2017-08-28 03:23:00 Empty folders are fine pctek (84)
1438596 2017-08-28 04:26:00 You could try compressing the mail file. Right click on the main mail folder, select data File Properties, advanced, and compact now. If you've been doing a lot of deletion the file may have become somewhat fragmented. It may not make any difference but it might be worth a go. Tony (4941)
