776018 2009-05-22 10:25:00 Hi all

have struck a wee issue while trying to re-install Windows XP Pro.

System was partway through setting up and came up with an error and a blue screen.

Error says "windows has been shut down to prevent damage"
Technical information: *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc000005, 0x804F162C, 0xBACFFA8C, 0xBACFF788)

Have tried it again as it said to do with the same result.

If I try to start with the XP disk it keeps on trying to set up again and then comes up with the same fault.

Computer was working kinda fine before the re-install.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers
Francis

776019 2009-05-22 10:38:00 You could try running a memory test, to test to see if your computer has faulty memory. But you need to have access to another PC with a CD burner. Software is available here. (http://www.memtest.org/)

Boot your PC from the burnt disk and leave it testing overnight, should do the trick .

try unplugging everything from your computer except motehrboard, ram, cpu, HD and GFX card and see if the error pops up

776021 2009-05-22 10:40:00 Are you using RAID or AHCI?? It looks like that stop error may have something to do with this. If AHCI is enabled in the BIOS are the SATA drivers slipstreamed on the CD? Speedy Gonzales (78)
776022 2009-05-22 11:02:00 By any chance have you got SP3 slipstreamed into the XP CD - Have seen this happen once, the install went in fine with SP2 - but NOT SP3. wainuitech (129)

Hi thanks, do you mean unplugging netork card and modem? Nothing else attached to computer. And it worked fine with them beforehand??

Hi there, no slipstreaming. Using the original XP disk. Don't think I ever updated to SP3 but not too sure.

Hi there,
what is AHCI? Not using RAID. SATA drivers would not be slipstreamed on the CD as I am using the original XP instal CD

Is the install Blue Screening at the same place every time ?

"Kinda Fine" ??? What exactly does that Mean - Was it doing something silly, unexpected.

IF so there could be a problem in some sectors on the HDD causing the problem - do you have access to a spare HDD that you can try installing XP on, just to see if it will Blue Screen at the same place, or carry on as normal ?

Edited: regarding the Memory test -- This will test the RAM to see if its got any faults - wont actually cure anything, but it will tell you if its faulty or not & needs to be replaced - what ISO burning software did you use - what you want is the memtest ISO (www.memtest.org) which will be in a zipped file - you extract the ISO file to some place you can find it ( desktops always good starting place) then burn that using your ISO burning software.

If you dont have any - get ISO recorder (isorecorder.alexfeinman.com) - install it - then locate the ISO file you just extracted, right click it, Select copy / Burn to CD - make sure there is a blank CD in the Drive - click Next - the software will write the file to CD as it's meant to, once its finished burning it will spit it out - boot from that CD - it should start auto running with no prompts from you - any failures will be in red.

PS: welcome to PF1 :)
