613346 2007-11-20 22:06:00 Customer bought Vantec 3.5" Enclosure and 320GB Seagate.
I put it together and formatted it. Great.

He goes home, it works briefly and then stops.

I test it, nope no power up at all.
I test drive in PC - its dead.

I plug my backup drive into it - with casing off to see it.
Smoke comes out!!!
OMG!!!

Still, my drive works, I just tried it.

Smoke cam from that bit shown in the picture, anyone know what that component does?

Thanks for your confidence in my IQ.

There is one IDE cable and one power cable. You couldn't *uck up the connections if you tried.

Besides I seem to recall asking if anyone knew what that component did, not whether or not they thought I was an idiot.

Yes. Its warranty week.......:badpc:

I've had a load of laptops one week, builds one week - this week its warranty.

Brand spanking new Corsair - kanckered.

Brand spanking new PSU - phhttt. (quietly)

And now a shiny new 320GB HDD that he had 5 minutes.

He was amazingly calm about it all. I'm not too thrilled though. ****** Vantec.

613352 2007-11-21 03:57:00 I have a Vantec External enclosure, it does not work with e SATA anymore, it used to, but it has not killed my HDD...

That component looks like a resistor, maybe they had wired it wrong and the 12VDC and 5VDC lines were crossed?

613355 2007-11-22 07:11:00 I read that in a megazine once it was pc user they said that that encloser has problems as well. Try getting Coolermaster Xcraft 350 as it has the best performance in benchmarks and best quality. Your hard drive component was fried that means you have no warranty.
Vantec and Welland both have their products rebadged and look similar i think one of them is a oem.
