The NCEA and scholarship exam season starts on Monday, involving almost 140,000 secondary school students at more than 400 exam centres.

New Zealand Qualifications Authority's deputy chief executive Bali Haque yesterday asked students to use traditional English, not text language.

But he said answers using words with missing vowels - in the style made popular through text messaging - would not necessarily fail.

"The litmus test will be ... have they understood the concept of the idea?" said Mr Haque.

612849 2007-11-18 22:17:00 I agree, there is a time and place for everything, examinations are not the place for non-exact expressions when answering questions.

School kids get too many leniences already! They need to learn to conform to society 1st. After they can, the choice is theirs!

Makes me glad, I finished high school just as they were starting to implement NCEA.

i was in 5th form when they started this NCEA crap - and it was a NIGHTMARE to teach all of my teachers AND my parents on how to interpret this NCEA bollocks - more time was spent figuring out WTF was going on rather than actually teaching the students

i Passed NCEA Level one and 2 - and i thought the whole thing was crap from day one

heres an example: for a incredibly hard maths test i had to do - 35 Questions in an achievement Standard - not the "easier" unit standard - i barley passed it and got 4 credits

2 weeks later i baked a Quiche in Foods class. i got 18 Credits for it +7 Credits for writing up a description of what i did and how i did it

im going to leave it at that cause im angry now :annoyed:

Oh for crying out loud, get over it buddy.
Anyone who CARES about achieving a good mark will write in full, it's what's drummed into our heads all year, english in particular.

612856 2007-11-19 00:41:00 On one hand this NCEA is hilarious, but on the other it is damn right tragic.

I had a young lady stay with us, when her father and mother, complete with other siblings, headed to Australia. She stayed to complete her last years schooling here and she passed a number of NCEA subjects with flying colours.

Her ambition was to become a Lawyer.

However, when she got to Australia her New Zealand NCEA qualifications weren’t worth the paper they were printed on and she was told straight up that she would have to go back to school over there and obtain the appropriate Australian qualifications. NCEA didn’t cut it over there.

The tragedy was that when last heard of she was a checkout chick in a Supermarket.

Her NCEA was of no use whatsoever in Australia, nor I suggest, anywhere else by now.

The idiots that invented and support this nonsense should be publicly flogged. :angry
