| 612736 | 2007-11-18 06:32:00 | Weather you believe in man made global warming or not here are my suggestions for cutting down on green house gases. In descending order of preference 1) Stop world-wide population growth by all countries immedialty introducing China's policy of one child per family. 2) Immedialty bring in compulsory sterilisation of all women after they have had two children. This would start an immediate drop in population. Which the world could stand for some centuries. We have gone from 3 billion people in 1950 to 6 billion now (approx) The idea of these two proposals is to stop world -wide population growth with the resulting pressure on green house gases production - oil use, cars, electrical generation etc etc. Here are some more ideas that would be necessary if 1 or 2 do not start to work, and indeed if you were serious about reducing the growth in greenhouse gases these should be brought in right now ! 3) Stop producing V8 cars. 4) Stop motor racing - (wasteful use of oil) 5) Stop all overseas holidays (wasteful travel) Regards Digby |

| 612738 | 2007-11-18 07:00:00 | At times this planet has been warmer than now and colder. There is only a finite amount of carbon in the earth with a lot of at the moment in peat swamps, trees, coal, crude oil etc. Sooner or later naturally its all going to get released. Problem at moment is a lot of the carbon is stored. Dosent mean its aways going to be stored. We are only thinking in terms of our mortality in centries. We should be thinking thousands of millions years ahead. My plan is release every atom of carbon as quicky as we can and learn to live with a few degrees more warmth. It all about moving on. C1 |

Eat less meat and dairy products, and end meat and dairy farming subsidies. Meat and dairy production produces more "greenhouse gases" than vehicle emissions, and probably leads to more area of land clearing than anything else caused by humans. Also benefits health. 2. Better urban design to make it more practical to use public transport, walk or cycle from place to place. Walking and cycling also benefits health. 3. Better housing design to reduce energy use for heating, cooling and lighting. Also should reduce water use. 4. More use of nuclear energy technology. 5. Reduce packaging and encourage recycling and reuse. |

Oh, eat more meat and dairy products, People are meant to be strong, Not some limp wristed office worker nibbling on a rye sandwich ad drinking a Soy latte. |

Here are some ideas though, in no particular order: 1. Eat less meat and dairy products, and end meat and dairy farming subsidies. Reduce packaging and encourage recycling and reuse. and as metla said, electric scooters! hell even petrol scooters/bikes are a godsend for conjested and polluted cities. just gets a bit hectic over in asia without any regulations though.... even compared to a bus they use a fraction of the oil, produce a fraction of the pollution, require much less infrastructure for parking, are a solution to current gridlock/conjestion issues, and do almost zero damage to the roads. compare that to a several ton hummer sitting parked on the motorway with one occupant. and electric cars would be a perfect solution to a big problem. EDIT: i think the best solution is to toughen up, restrict our growth, and adapt to the changes. we'll be forced off oil soon enough |

| 612743 | 2007-11-18 10:16:00 | One cow, pig and sheep per family per year. The rest of our feed should come from grains, fruits, legumes, fish and vegetables, and a few chooks and eggs. Oh, and free peanuts for all. | Greg (193) | ||
| 612744 | 2007-11-18 12:08:00 | 1. 1800cc cars and less cc. 2. Catalic Converters on all vechicles compulsory, and smoke tests on exhursts as well. 3. Promote the use of motorbikes, bycycles, walking. 4. Convert the whole rooftop on all buildings/homes etc to be a big solar panel so each buiding/home etc use that power before using the national grid and any spare goes to the national grid and you get credits for it for when you need to get some from the national grid. 5. Get more wind farms/solar panel farms. 6. NZ is an island country so we should get into wave technology as well like the U.K.. 7. Get better public transport, trains, bus. 8. Turn of electric lights when not needed-ie all those city buildings after work lit up for nothing etc. 9. Get better tec on all electric devices to use less electric. 10. Turn off all devices when not needed-not by using the remote but at the source-button or at the powerpoint etc. :2cents: |

| 612745 | 2007-11-18 12:42:00 | while having solar on all north facing surfaces would be nice, it is hideously expensive, an ecological disaster to manufacture/dispose of, and on a crappy day the whole country or a large portion thereof will need to draw power from the grid, putting a very highly variable load on our power generation (ie, an engineering/economical nightmare) but, tidal /wave power through cook straight could be very good |
