612665 2007-11-18 01:15:00 Maybe its the electric personality thing striking again:p

recently i had to get said washing machine fixed, this would be the 2nd maybe third time since i got it in the last 2 yrs, and it being second hand.
The problem being las time it wouldnt pump out. got that fixed, and pipe to tub raised so wouldnt syphon back into washing machine.

it pumps out fine now, but often when its switched itself off at the end, its still soaking. so i often have to get it to re spin, sometimes trying multiples of times. i am loath to spend more money on it, as it was second hand and i could have bought a new one for the fix it jobs ive had done on it,
so what im asking is ......... i know its not out of balance, and it spins fine other wise sometimes, what may be the problem and is it worth fixing? its a big machine, a 8kg sized one, cant recall make right this moment, but bad words at it doesnt make it go better, and it takes a lot longer than normal to do a load now. :(

i have one other dead washing machine, and this sick one......... so maybe two to the dump, and a new one could be on the cards?

You may have to stand there and observe what exactly happens when it turns off.

A couple of things I’ve observed causing this problem is something intermittently getting stuck in the pump. You need to actually try and turn the pump by hand just to see if it feels stuck. The most common problems I’ve encountered are Bra Wires, fish hooks and 5 cent pieces. They can get dislodged and then washed back with the water flow.

It may also be faulty out of balance switch/sensor or the washing may in actual fact be out of balance, but you need to be there when it shuts down to get an idea just what’s happening.

Then it may be a faulty control unit, but these tend not to be intermittent.

Either way, unless it is just the washing out of balance, I think you’ll have trouble fixing it yourself.

612667 2007-11-18 01:57:00 LOL
wasnt intending to fix it myself............. 6 weeks ago they did indeed pull something out of the pump......... but it pumps out fine, i cannot see any water in the washer tub when it is finished and the clothes are against the tub walls like it has spun out. but when i go to pull out the washing it is still so heavy with water and sopping i put it on spin again.
sometimes it does spin, sometime i have gone back and its changed and is on a rinse cycle........... and full of water again, so it could be a faulty board.
the main problem is it is an outside washouse and i dont hear it when it gets to that stage to go watch ........ and often i forget about it........ being out of sight out of mind like.

PS its a Smartdrive

612668 2007-11-18 02:48:00 ok i went out and when washer turned off and empty tipped it over and found what i consider to be pump motor, with the dusty fan attached to it and it spins nicely, i do not know how to get that off or if i need to?
but if it spins freely its most likely not blocked?

lol didnt kill it it seems as i placed back on feet and turn on and put more washing in it and its going........ lol

ok well may just purservere i guess.

612669 2007-11-18 03:22:00 Yeeeeeeeee gods beetle, I thought you didn’t intend to fix it yourself. :D

Depending on the model of the SmartDrive there is often a plate on the front that comes off so you can reach the pump without tipping the whole machine upside down. If you must tip it upside down tip it forward so any residual water doesn’t run into the electronics. Also watch the lid. They’re easy enough to break if it fly’s open or you have placed the power lead under it and inside the bowl.

Anyway, I’ll have a long range guess and say the machine isn’t level and if it is the Out of Balance Switch/Sensor is faulty.

Does the bowl sit nice and even when it is empty? Like sitting in the middle of the frame access hole?

612671 2007-11-18 03:39:00 Ditch the F &P smart drive they are nothing but trouble. One of the most troublesome bits of machinery ever made by man.
Get a Fisher and Paykell 380 or 400 thats the model before the smart drive.
They are very reliable (I know of one thats been going for 25 yrs without a fault) and should you need to fix it they are very very simple.
I get them off the roadside for inorganic collection fix them up and sell them thru T&E and TM. So buy one and then get one off the road take it apart for spares.

612672 2007-11-18 03:58:00 Dead right chicken one .

The 380 & 400 were probably the best Washing Machine made by anybody anywhere .

(I’ve got a feeling the Germans were involved somewhere in their development, might be wrong)

You’d stave to death if you were a serviceman relying on them for your bread and butter . :D

612673 2007-11-18 09:35:00 Yup, I've got a 380, still goin' after 25yrs, label inside says it's designed by these guys

(Germans!)

The control boards seem to bugger up a lot on the Gentle Annies and Smartdrives, expensive to fix too ($300 odd).

612674 2007-11-19 01:07:00 What about Simpson - anybody got an opinion about them? Might have to buy a new washing machine soon as the old F&P is leaking again. Deane F (8204)
