613573 2007-11-23 20:19:00 SJ - oak does have a distinctive smell that can be quite annoying. It can be particularly noticeable when wine has been left in oak barrels during its maturation - sometimes the smell and taste in the wine is unbearable. It is often referred to by wine tasters as the cigar box smell - presumably cigar boxes were traditionally made of oak. For some time our winemakers got obsessed with using it when aging chardonnay, but thankfully the fashion seems to be waning. They were even putting oak chips in the wine to impart the "flavour" and smell whilst the wine was maturing.

My uncle and aunt had some oak living room furniture with that really strong smell, which I remember disliking intensely as a child.

I was also wondering if there is any sawdust floating around too that could be an irritant - we have a timber here called rimu that creates a very fine dust when it is milled or sanded. I wear a mask when working with it because it has an intense irritating effect on my lungs and sinuses. I don't know if oak is like that because I have never worked with it, but it is a possibility I guess.

Welll-l-l-l-l-l.......

I like the taste of a good single malted Scotch...Glenlivet (www.theglenlivet.com) comes to mind...but that oak flavor is an acquired taste.

I guess I can live with the oak-y-ness if I just dream of single-malts.

............the hair of the dog and all that! :)

Okay.... I think the oak flavour in single malt is a bit more subtle than we are used to with wine, where for a while the winemakers were beating us over the head with it like a truncheon so you couldn't taste the wine (probably why they did it, so that they could palm off any old crap...)

Anyway, I prefer Bruichladdich - www.bruichladdich.com/ to Glenlivet, but whatever blows your kilt up... http:
