612695 2008-01-15 00:40:00 Not any more. We have a F&P fridge, that has a broken shelf, a washine machine that has needed fixing twice. Go back 15 years, then yes they were reliable. Now... Nah.

A broken shelf is hardly a reliability issue, as that is damage caused by an accident.

I would however agree that their fridges are flimsy and poorly made. The plastic on the white ones yellow, and they look taty over time. I guess they want you to buy a new one every 10 years. Don't mention butter conditioners, mine never worked properly, and they have now stopped selling them with butter conditioners, possibily because they were unreliable.

612696 2008-01-15 02:35:00 Buy a simpson washing machine but make sure you get a mechanical one .......they still around? even simpson went electronic. years ago simpson used to be problem brand. constant repair jobs on them.

F&P Gentle annie (am I spelling it right?) are pretty good, well the old ones at least. they are the WORSE washing machine F&P ever made. sounds like you got a good one.

I don't know of any F&P washing machines that have knobs you have to go back many many years for the non electronic ones, the ones with a chunk of concrete in them.

not a smoker by any chance ? thats the common cause of whiteware going yellow.

afaik NZ is one of the few countries that ever had butter conditioners. with semi soft butter these days they are not an item people want. even years ago they where dropped to an extra option advaiable on request.

No, not a smoker, and have never had smokers in the house. I think it is due to exposure to light and age, as other white cheap plastic, such as white computer computer stuff also yellows over time.

612698 2008-01-15 03:01:00 tweak'e is correct wrt to the knob version, I have a friend with one that I carry out minor repairs on every now and again.

Surfer Joe mentioned that the knob mechanism was stripped, actually once you set the start position then pull it out to start the machine the knob then free-wheels. Maybe F&P is selling this old but reliable version in America.

I also have a Gentle Annie which I repaired and I can assure you that the reason so many of them failed is bad/thin soldering from the flow solder machine not being "heavyed" up by hand causing many of the failures. I have seen this problem on all of the production lines I have worked on in NZ, Tait, Wormald Vig, Spectrum Associates, Dynamic Controls with a variety of products.

The power devices are connected to the PCB's and the heatsinks and eventually vibration (a big problem in washing machines) breaks the thin/light solder joints and electrical failure ensues.

612700 2008-01-15 05:04:00 Simpson............. in the last 13 months my mum has been thro 4 of these .. brand new......the first one got sent back after 2 days. it refused to go, and leaked....... they found it had not been put together well enuf and all the bolts. screws had come undone.
2nd one came..was getting unpacked....... huge big dent in the side...... back it goes.
3rd one......... went for a month.then flooded the laundry.and refused to work.... they just replaced it.... no questions asked....
4th one goes......... but is slow compared to the others, but it goes, doesnt leak and my mum can work it........ so she has had it about 4 - 6months... and occasionally it refuses to work and then next time its fine........ and it beeps an awful lot for no reason.

it was a present......... they will never get that brand again...

612702 2008-01-15 05:46:00 I went to Home Depot today . . . and guess what?

They stopped carrying them a couple of months ago . . right around October .

Why?

Nobody bought them . . and those poor welfare recipients who did brought them back as either defective or poor quality or they wouldn't work .

I understand about the freewheeling part of the knob when the cycle is set and the knob pulled out to start the machine .

There are a few solid state control panels on upper end machines . . but usually Americans like a good old fashioned knob to twist .

So . . I will look around some more . . . will try a few other appliance stores . . but so far . . ziltch! I carry my digital camera everywhere . . . and will find one somewhere I hope .
