613560 2007-11-22 20:05:00 Watchin the vid made he hungry . . . . funny how ya paused on yer truck lol

Those are all relatives on my wife's side of the family . My wife Rosanna is the one in the blue/white blouse .

Her three sons, David (the young guy with the Frisbee®), Tim (the older one with the glasses and gray tee shirt . . he's a cop) and Joe the bum; her daughter Sarah (the heavy-set one) and her husband Jeff; her older sister Mary in the black outfit, and her husband Doug with the baseball hat and the other camera .

There are grandkids . . .

Sarah/Jeff = Ian (the big baby!), and Michael (still crib-bound and the biggest noise too)
Joe (no wife) = Gabriel . . the nasty little guy with the largest vocabulary
Tim/Melonie (not present) = Paige, the little blonde girl, and Emma, her sister . . maybe not evident, but there .

This was just a little park . . a greenbelt really . . . between housing tracts near our place . It was just build a few weeks ago and is still very newish .

I'm back from fishing early . . too crowded . . it's Thanksgiving Day here today and there are just TMP at the lake right now . (TMP= too many people) . This is a four day holiday for the US and everything but Wal-Mart is closed in preparation of "Black Friday" or the day after sales in the stores .

There are people lined up to get first crack at the sales . . and the stores don't even open for another day yet . Sheeesh!

We don't bother celebrating the holiday . . . not for religious reasons . . it's just too much hassle . Today my wife is cooking a really good potato soup and baking some bread . The neighbors are all out either b-b-q ing their turkeys or steaks or some other dead animal . . YUM!

The air is rife with the smells of searing flesh and the sounds of relatives getting drunk . I expect to see the police here in the neighborhood sometime today to haul a few drunk illegal "immigrants" away .

Our first night below freezing was last night too . But my garden is still producing as I covered my eggplant up with newspaper cones . Not much harvest left now .

Gonna burn a few dvds and cds .

613561 2007-11-22 20:17:00 We use rods for fishing here, poles are for climbing up .

Strange looking bed . So old fashioned, which I know you yankies like .

We have lightning rods, A-Rod, hot-rods and we rod-out our clogged sewer lines .

We have fishing poles, flag poles, Poles from Poland, North/South Poles . . . . but a pole for fishing would be too heavy . . . like the taber toss in Scotland .

Anybody who'd go fishing with a taber could just stand on the shore and tell the fish to come out of the water I guess .

Both sides.

My side doesn't have the stuffed animals or the fuzzy pink slippers.

Yeah..the darned steps are heavy too! I just leave them on my wife's side of the bed so she can get in and out..actually out is a little easier for her..lol.

613565 2007-11-22 22:49:00 No . . . it's all planks of oak . . . some of the unfinished and unseen parts under the bed are less than prime surface pattern . . . but no chip/particle board at all .

Here's the pixs of it in my room: . imagef1 . net . nz/files/100_04201195748094 . jpg" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz

Can you tell what side is mine?

I had to get a couple of guys to help deliver it for me . . . it has some really big parts, but there is some assembly required . We never found any softwoods or blemished wood in it anywhere . . . even where it doesn't show .

I believe that the headboard has some vernier and maybe the drawer faces too . . but it's really hard to see if there's any facade verniers at all .

The eight drawers are functional . . . the linens are in a couple of the wide side ones and my stuff in the end ones on the foot board .

The top of the mattress is at my belly button . . . my wife uses the step stool to get in but I don't have any troubles .

I had it since April and it seems that I'd notice if there's less odor by now . . but with the colder weather coming on and the windows closed more during the day, maybe I can smell the woods more now .

Did you import it yourself, or did you buy it from a NZ retailer?

I think it is likely to be the varnish that is used . Polyurathane is one of the most toxic substances , and it offgases for years, and some people can become allergic to it over time .
The ad says it is oak veneer, so it is very likely that the think layers of oak are over a MDF or particle board . Sometimes it can be difficult to tell until you look closely at it .
Also where was it made?It wasn't china was it? I hope not, as you don't know what they have used to glue it all together and what other chemcials are in the materials . If it is china, you can assume that it is built as cheaply as possible, as that is the reason why companies subcontract to china .

If that came from NZ I will eat my hat.

613567 2007-11-23 02:43:00 It came from Solano Italy . . there are many places that sell the same bed with different titles on them . . and I looked pretty hard for particle board . . . not anyplace that I could see where there might be any .

I saw the statement of product and the bill of goods in Italian and the customs stamps with a certification that there were no hazardous materials in the construction . Port of entry was New York . . so I guess it came over with Columbus .

Some of the quality tip-off is the hardware . . . all beautifully done and the screws and dowels are all fitted nicely . The handles and the face plates are solid, not stamped out of thin metal and pot metal brackets .

I looked at all the inner back sides, supports and wing pieces and all the end stock where the boards are cut . . even the inner, not-for-show ones aren't pressed wood .

The shipping weight was 700 lbs/317 . 51kg, and I believe it!

It doesn't appear that any plastic coating is used either as they provided a couple of bottles of scratch stain and also surface cleaner that are very oily . . and I don't suppose oil is good for anything but bare wood .

Some times it is very difficult to tell if wood is solid or not, as if the veneer is done well, it is glued to all edges without any gaps . I am sure that some of it really is solid timber, however if it was all solid oak, I would suspect that it would have been alot more expensive than what you paid for it . You may find that the panels are Oak plywood . I think it would still weigh the same if it was solid timber or not . However that doesn't answer the problem with the smell, which is most likely coming from the surface coatings . You maybe should contact the seller, as they may know something about it .
