612868 2007-11-19 09:29:00 Hell yeah, of course. It's our future they're toying with. And we're paying those f***ing useless miscreants $75 each year for ruining our future just to receive a budget piece of paper saying I've passed child's play.

With the amount of ass sucking you do, I'm not surprised that you are full of sh*t.

Personally I prefer the old system, I used to be a National Examiner in the Trades area, which is where they first introduced this unit standards stuff back in the late '80s/early '90s, but I resigned rather than work within an experimental system because it was clear then that the system was fundamentally flawed. The decline of tradesperson quality and skills was inevitable.

NCEA isn't everything it could be, however the secondary schools system has bedded in now and after much modification it is finally producing reasonable results. Both my kids have easily qualified for University and have not found the reversion to traditional examination methods much of a problem.

Now it is up to the individual student as to how well they do, and getting back to txt language, if they use that it is my bet that they'll automatically fail (sorry, not achieve), regardless of any opinions expressed to the contrary by education bureaucrats. If you are marking/assessing hundreds of papers and you come across one you need an interpreter to read, I know which pile I'd dump it in.

Cheers

That’s true Billy, but being well qualified for University in New Zealand, doesn’t make you qualified at all overseas it would seem. As my friend’s daughter found out in Australia.

To make matters worse I was talking to a gentleman in Senior Management for one of our biggest public companies and he told me that if you turn up looking for a job with them and your only credentials are NCEA in a number of subjects, they put you through some internal exams of their own. That’s before you get off the ground and even get an interview. Employers simply don’t trust NZ qualifications any more.

Shame really that we’ve lowered the bar so everyone can jump it.

I note also that some schools have picked up on the problem and are offering what I think is called the “Cambridge Exam” which is recognised elsewhere.

612871 2007-11-19 18:43:00 Next year we'll hear things like

"2007 NCEA students finding it hard to get jobs"
"NCEA rethinking allowing text language in tests"

This is the real issue and an important one. But ultimately, NCEA isn't solely responsible for this - the actual quality of education has been eroded for many years. NCEA just attempts (unsucessfully) to hide it.

The problem with Cambridge is it is an academic system and we need to educate our kids across the board. You shouldn't need to be destined for university to be able to read, write and add. It is immensely unpopular to talk about the "3 Rs", as if it belongs to a primitive age of education, but at the end of the day society needs its citizens to have these basic skills.

TxT is not English. It is not a language. It is a technological solution to the speeding up communication using a mobile phone. That is all it is. There should be no place for it within an educational environment.

I agree with you Bruce, it’s a serious matter despite the fact some of us think it hilarious .

It doesn’t worry me personally as my kids and grandkids have moved to Aus . and I’ll be off too as soon as I get my pension sorted .

But, for the Texter’s out there, here’s a little poem that used to be very popular in exams .

I wonder if some of you would care to re-write it in txt lingo .

I’d just like to see what it would be like marking the English paper .

UNDER the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie:
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will .

This be the verse you 'grave for me
Here he lies where he long'd to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill .

I cringe in anticipation . :D
