776028 2009-05-23 00:00:00 Is the install Blue Screening at the same place every time ?

"Kinda Fine" ??? What exactly does that Mean - Was it doing something silly, unexpected.

IF so there could be a problem in some sectors on the HDD causing the problem - do you have access to a spare HDD that you can try installing XP on, just to see if it will Blue Screen at the same place, or carry on as normal ?

Edited: regarding the Memory test -- This will test the RAM to see if its got any faults - wont actually cure anything, but it will tell you if its faulty or not & needs to be replaced - what ISO burning software did you use - what you want is the memtest ISO (www.memtest.org) which will be in a zipped file - you extract the ISO file to some place you can find it ( desktops always good starting place) then burn that using your ISO burning software.

If you dont have any - get ISO recorder (isorecorder.alexfeinman.com) - install it - then locate the ISO file you just extracted, right click it, Select copy / Burn to CD - make sure there is a blank CD in the Drive - click Next - the software will write the file to CD as it's meant to, once its finished burning it will spit it out - boot from that CD - it should start auto running with no prompts from you - any failures will be in red.

PS: welcome to PF1 :)

Hi

blue screen appears at the same place all the time. It's about halfway though installing devices when the blue screen appears. As suggested in a previous post everything except HDDs, DVD drives, and video card have been unplugged.

When I say "kinda fine" I mean that is was working ok, but has slowed down significantly after three years of installing wee programs. Think there may have been a virus or something thrown in as well.
Have managed to burn a copy of memtest and that's happily working now.
:thanks
Thanks for advice and will report back!

Cheers

776029 2009-05-23 00:02:00 Hi thanks, do you mean unplugging netork card and modem? Nothing else attached to computer. And it worked fine with them beforehand??

Cheers
Francis

Unplug them anyways. Sometimes they can cause problems

Hi there,
what is AHCI? Not using RAID. SATA drivers would not be slipstreamed on the CD as I am using the original XP instal CD

Cheers
Francis

If you don't have a SATA driver you can ignore this

In the BIOS(tap F1/Del on boot) you can see whether the hard drive is set to AHCI or IDE modem(compatible or advanced)

If its set to AHCI change it to IDE.

If you don't have a SATA driver you can ignore this

See if you can boot from the XP CD, access the recovery console, and completely format the drive, then try installing again

776030 2009-05-23 00:21:00 blue screen appears at the same place all the time If all the extra cards have been removed, or not present at all, and it happens in the exact same place every time when loading devices, thats either a fault on the Board, or a Hard Drive thats got a "bad Spot" and will fail Every time at that spot.

As mentioned before - If the memory tests OK - the next step I would do to a customers PC is attach a different drive to see if it still does it - if it does, then theres a probable problem on the board or the CD is faulty, if Not, then replace the HDD.

It's about halfway though installing devices when the blue screen appears If its the place I think you are talking about, its already installed the OS on the drive, so not seeing the drive is NOT a problem. OR do you mean when you first put in the CD and it loads files in for installing (first few seconds)

I do this for a living and see these sorts of problems daily, you have to eliminate any hardware one piece at a time, to make sure its OK.

776032 2009-05-23 23:13:00 I would perform a chkdsk on that second HDD.

Could possibly be faulty
