613356 2007-11-22 08:09:00 Yes. Its warranty week.......:badpc:

I've had a load of laptops one week, builds one week - this week its warranty.

Brand spanking new Corsair - kanckered.

Brand spanking new PSU - phhttt. (quietly)

And now a shiny new 320GB HDD that he had 5 minutes.

He was amazingly calm about it all. I'm not too thrilled though. ****** Vantec.

It's to see as a quality computer shop.................:xmouth:

613357 2007-11-22 09:30:00 The only 'weeks' I've had lately are PSU Week and Dead Hard Drive Week.

Why do all related PC faults seem to happen at the same time. Seriously, I had about 5 dead PSUs that week - normally I don't even do 5 jobs a week. Same story for dodgy hard drives.

613358 2007-11-22 18:06:00 We haven't had a PSU week for a while. We usually get a dead hard drive week or fortnight every month. We had a faulty RAM week not too long ago.

We are yet to have a faulty motherboard week.

You shouldn't have said that. :xmouth:

Whereever I have worked, or for myself, I take note of what comes back faulty, and if its common - 2% or more - they get the boot and I change brands.

Lets hope there is a good supply of alternatives.

I'm not talking about stuff we sell - that almost never comes back for hardware faults. We just seem to have runs of faulty (usually old) hardware of the same type.

613363 2007-11-22 22:44:00 It's not a voltage regulator; it is (was) an electrolytic capacitor. It might have been inserted backwards (highly unlikely, but just possible). They normally explode ( a lovely bang) if connected backwards. It might have been a dud one with high leakage current. The high current should have shut down the power supply, which should come up if the capacitor has gone open now that the smoke has escaped. Graham L (2)

The thing on the HDD - not in the enclosure or its power supply .

613365 2007-11-25 00:20:00 So, it's still a capacitor, probably a tantalum electrolytic. (Or, just possibly, a diode. A reverse connected diode is sometimes put at the power input to give some protection against a a reverse polarity supply. I would not expect to see one in a disk drive, with a polarised power connector. ) Graham L (2)
