2007-11-22 00:11:00 | It's often hard to tell when reading reviews whether some of the issues they raise are significant to the average user or not. What I maybe should have asked is what cameras do people own and love (with similar specs to those I mentioned) and which would they not buy again. Am pleased to hear you like the FZ8 Misty, it's one that I'm still seriously considering - along with TZ3, A720 & A650.

2007-11-22 00:14:00 | I have a Canon ixus 7mp camera and it is/was great. Great pictures, easy to use and fits in your pocket so never left behind (bout the same size as pack of 20 cigarettes). Unfortunately i dropped it and its crapped out. Now i have a fuji s3000 and its a pain to carry around. Unless your preparred to carry your camera around your neck or lug a camera bag around then make sure the camera you get fits in your pocket. I used to have my ixus in one pocket and phone in the other. No worries about where anything is. | lazydog (148) | |
2007-11-22 00:48:00 | I have a Canon A720is which I bought to replace my A80 which has too small a screen for me these days and I need the image stabilisation! I also have a whole armoury of 35mm SLR gear. The A720 takes great pictures and has more than adequate manual options and is easy to carry around. It also has the advantage of using alkaline AA batteries at a pinch altho I recommend NiMh for normal use. From years of experience and travel, believe me the lighter and smaller the camera (within reason) the more pictures you will take.

That's why I've kept the Canon A95 even though I bought the Pentax K100 DSLR. One for holidays, one for "real" photography. :) | Tony (4941) | ||
2007-11-22 03:56:00 | I use one of these:- www.dpreview.com Most of time I have it with me. I have never been disappointed with image quality. One of the features I really like is the fact that the LCD tilts. I guess a few people know about taking pictures of people. If you point the camera at them they will pose. Seeing grandchildren opening Christmas presents I can sit in a chair with the camera on my lap and they do not know until the flash goes off. At BBQs I can take Video with sound. At a sport venue you can hold the camera in one hand over your head and get above the crowd. For example if the Wizard was in front you can still get a shot of the action in spite of a tall hat. :-) This camera has a manual zoom from 28 - 210. Carl Ziess lense. I have not bought a tripod and there is no image stabilisation. Just simply hang the strap around my neck and rest the camera against my more than adequate front. Bought this a couple of years ago and see no reason to rush out and buy a new camera. I fully realise there are different strokes for different folks. Have fun with whatever you get.

Mind you, don't go too much by what I say, as I hardly know one setting of ISO from another ...... and as for "noise" - I am lost - I still think its what you get at Metallica concerts ! Still there is lots of reading to do and lots of resources, so please leave me at it at the moment, folks. If you give me all types of tips and explanations will only get overload. Will ask when I get stuck. All the best Hokonui in sorting out the wheat from the chaff !! Misty :) |

2007-11-22 18:39:00 | My only disappointment has been the download and processing software, which works, but is fairly awkward - especially when dealing with RAW data. You should try Adobe Photoshop Elements. I use the downloader component in that all the time, even though I use Photoshop prober for processing. But elements will do everything its big broher does, including RAW processing.

2007-11-22 18:58:00 | You should try Adobe Photoshop Elements.Good idea - does it handle all types of RAW data? Pentax seems to have its own proprietary format, with a PEF extension. You can save it as the Adobe RAW format (I forget the name) but you have to use the crap software to do it. (sigh) | Tony (4941) | |
2007-11-22 19:06:00 | Both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements use Adobe Camera RAW, a plug in that Adobe updates regularly with support for new cameras: www.adobe.com The Pentax would've been supported several versions ago. The downloader tool let's you rename files as you copy them across, place them in your hosen location, creating a new folder as you do so. I have it set so that it renames all my files as yyyy mm dd -n (where n is just the number sequence), and puts them in a folder yyyy mm dd.

2007-11-22 22:56:00 | Thanks for the tip Bruce. I've downloaded the trial of Photoshop Elements, and it certainly seems to do the trick with the Pentax RAW data. The question now becomes do I want to spend $162 when (a) the software I already have works, albeit clumsily, and (b) I have Corel Graphics suite and Paint Shop Pro 7 which seem to do everything else that PS Elements does. I'll keep playing with it for the next 29 days :) and then make up my mind.
