..........some free, but then a cost. Will be interesting to see the charges. Mind you can store a lot on gmail at present for free (which I think is still beta - wonder if some people are still losing data ?).

615647 2007-11-27 15:11:00 I've got several...over 10 accounts and have stored lots of stuff with them....and not lost a zero or a one yet. (as in binary numbers 100010110)

Maybe they're setting me up for a lot of $$ later, but so far the free ride is great.

615648 2007-11-27 15:12:00 Google Inc is preparing a service that would enable users to store data from their personal hard drives on its computers, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday in its online edition.

Users would be able to house files they would normally store on personal computers -- such as word-processing documents, digital music, video clips and images

yeh great............not....

I wont be using any kind of service like that......

I prefer to KEEP my data on MY computer and/or back it up to cd/dvd which costs a ridiculously small amount......that way it's in MY hands (literally) and not on some server thousands of Km's away and beyond my control.......gawd knows what could happen and if something bad happens wheres your data and how are you gonna retreive it ?

Whoa! We gotta separate raisins from grapes here .

DATA is what every keystrike is to a computer . . and I say that there's no way to need to worry about data per se .

Now . . . if I had the secret plans to making a bomb or a terrorist device, then I say yes . . save it yourself on your puter .

BUT . . . if you have a collection of (self-owned) archived music or pictures etc on their storage place, it just makes no good sense to worry about it being misused and in a dangerous environment .

The way I see it is that I have "another archival" spot for my files and it's just as good as secure and safe there too .

Redundancy of archives, if the data's important enuff, is always a good idea .

Just as a sidebar, make sure that you have the rights to archive certain media data, as we can here in the US at the present .

Hmmmmmmmmm . . . wonder if I can apply "ex post facto" later on if I get enough media stored and they decide to change the law here . Hmmmmmm . :nerd:

615652 2007-11-27 18:51:00 yeh fine but i'd still rather have stuff nearer to hand personally after all digital storage is SOOOOOOOO cheap now drcspy (146)

That remark could well embarrass you in a couple of years when storage really is cheap.

Your data may well be stored cheaply, and in a very secure (from a data-loss viewpoint) location. However, Google are masters of data searching and analysing. Could it be that spam will be so cunningly matched to your profile shortly that you will be totally unable to filter it out?

yeh on cd/dvd or spare hdd's........i've NO plans EVER to use 'online' storage...

615655 2007-11-27 21:46:00 The problem with online storage is that you need to upload stuff to it. Problematic if you have big files or a lot of 'stuff' to store, given NZ's data caps and slow upload speeds (relative to many other countries, that is...) johcar (6283)
