776795 2009-05-25 06:31:00 Would like some help in choosing a laptop for my son who will be going to uni next year. He is not big on gaming, into photoshop for still shots but may get into filming. Hope to spend less than $1800 and have been quoted on the computer below for $1385.00 incl of GST. Any comments would be appreciated.

776796 2009-05-25 06:52:00 Get the ASUS instead (www.dse.co.nz) for $14 more

Also has firewire, if you're planning on doing video editing. Are you in NZ or somewhere else?

+1 for that

The Asus has the proper Core 2 Duo CPU and a better graphics card.

It is dual core but lower spec'd than the Core 2 Duo CPUs.
Only 1MB cache, slower bus speed, runs hotter etc

Sorry Trev, but I must beg to differ - we use IBM/Lenovo thinkpads exclusively at work, and have for 7 years, and they're excellent machines . Not the most attractive for sure, but our fleet get a hammering, and have always performed really well .

But yeah, back to the OP . . . . . ASUS +1 as well (Lenovo a close 2nd!)

776804 2009-05-25 18:25:00 Asus is better here, but if you want to get it for that price at DSE you better hurry, only a few stores with it stocked, and less than 3 left in each!

You might also want to consider buying him an external monitor if he does a lot of photoshop work. And an accurate mouse.
