2009-05-25 04:52:00 | Hey All After reading an article in last months PC World and on the writers recomendation, I purchased "ROXIO Easy VHS to DVD" package. However, it has been anything but "Easy" After loading with errors, removing, reloading with more errors, loading to my laptop(successfully) I have still not managed to get the software to run. Both my desktop and lappy are running XPPro Service pack 3 When I either click on the desktop icon or run the program from file explorer, all that happens is that a small box flashes on the screen with the Roxio trademark? on it and then disapears back to the desk top. After much Googling and looking at the Roxio support and forums, it would seem that there are many issues with this application. I wrote to Roxio support and received the following Thank you for Contacting Roxio Technical Support a. Hold your Windows key(bottom left of keyboard) and press the letter 'R' this will open a RUN dialog box. b. Type 'msconfig' and click on the 'OK' button or press the 'Enter' key. c. Select the 'Startup' tab over on the right side. d. Write down which items are checked, and then click on the 'Disable All' button in the lower right corner of the screen. e. Click on the 'Apply' button. f. Select the 'Services' tab. g. Put a check mark in the box beside of 'Hide all Microsoft Services' WARNING NOT CHECKING THIS BOX FIRST COULD CAUSE A WINDOWS COMPONENT TO BE DISABLED. Now click disable all and recheck the Roxio Creator 2009 or 11 components. h. Click on the 'Apply' button and then click on 'OK'. i. Click 'YES' to restart the computer. j. When you reach the Desktop, you may receive a message saying 'you have used the 'System Configuration Utility' to make changes to your system....', you get this message, simply place a checkmark in a box on the lower left side titled, 'Do not show me this message again' and click on the 'OK' button. NOTE: To reverse these changes after testing, follow steps a to c, and then place the checkmarks back in the boxes based on the notes you made. For optimal performance, only Anti-Virus or Firewall software should be enabled. (for this test all should be disabled) Regards, Roxio Technical Supporthttp://www.roxio.com/enu/support As you can see, there is no reason given for why these changes should be made and I am a little loathe to do this untill I understand why. Any ideas and has anyone else had any issues with this software. Thanks

2009-05-25 07:56:00 | Roxio isn't know for marvellous software. Why not just get a VHS/DVD combo unit and transfer your stuff that way? My father did and is happily converting all his videos now. Cheap as dirt.

2009-05-25 08:43:00 | I used Sonic MyDvD to transfer video, but would not work properly, unless if a Intel driver was uninstalled from the system. This was to prevent conflict with Sonic. I guess their could be a conflict in your software... | kahawai chaser (3545) | |

Cheap as dirt. +1 Generic stuff from TM does the stuff:p Happy Harry: I have no idea why disabling the Roxio components from msconfig would be a good idea, but I can tell you that it shouldn't affect anything if it does go wrong. Personally I only ever disable services from services.msc... Blam |

2009-05-25 22:12:00 | I have converted VHS to DVD using a TV tuner card. Connected the VHS to PC and recorded it then converted the file to DVD format (VOB). Along time since I did it but think I used Nero to convert to DVD format. :)

2009-05-25 22:40:00 | My parents have a mammoth VHS collection, and are in the process of transferring it all to DVD now. They got one of these (www.ascent.co.nz), although it was only $150 when they got it, and using a combo of the bundled software and Nero 7 to burn to DVD. Works really well. The card has onboard MPEG encoding etc, so no rapage of the CPU like you get with some cheaper cards.

2009-05-26 07:41:00 | Just bought one myself. Wish I'd checked the Forum first. The software won't install at all. Gets part way through then uninstalls and says it was interrupted. We are not amused!
