2009-05-25 03:19:00 | Is there software that will give an accurate comparison of speeds etc between these 2 setups? I have both systems going in front of me now and am unable to pick up any differences in speed or quality of graphics etc. Have just built the new one and expected to get more noticeable improvement than I have been able to see apart from the fact that the hardware is newer. Software on both is almost identical... Old System . * SiS 661GX * Pentium 4, 2933 MHz * 2048 MB DDR PC3200 * GeForce 7600 GS AGP * Seagate Barracuda (160GB) ATA * XP Pro SP3 (32bit) New System * ASUS M3N78 PRO * AMD Athlon64 X2 7750 2.7Ghz * Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5 2x2GB * Seagate Barracuda (160GB) SATA * XP Pro SP3 (32bit)

2009-05-25 03:27:00 | Play something on the old system like a video/dvd if you can?? Does it lag then start after like 10 secs? Or open my computer or a program. Does it open straight away, or take at least 10 secs+ to open?? Thats what I noticed when I used to have a SIS based mobo. it lagged, and EVERYTHING took at least 10-15 secs to open. In the end I biffed it

2009-05-25 03:34:00 | No problems like what you say on my P4 or new AMD. This is why I'm asking the questions:) P4 goes very well but is getting old (like me:)) hence the decision to upgrade. I haven't put a separate GPU in the new one yet (will be getting 4770)

2009-05-25 03:39:00 | What sort of games and/or multimedia editing software do you run on it? Photo Impact, Xara Xtreme, Flash All work good on old P4, seem to be okay on new AMD. Only games I play are online snooker/pool (Quite graphics intensive but not extreme)

2009-05-25 03:59:00 | It may be a case of not doing much that was really that taxing for the old PC to notice too much of an improvement. PCMark or similar benchmarking tools may be the best way to see a difference. | inphinity (7274) | |
2009-05-25 04:56:00 | * Pentium 4, 2933 MHz * 2048 MB DDR PC3200 New System * AMD Athlon64 X2 7750 2.7Ghz * Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5 2x2GB Because its not enough of a change. a 32bit O/S isn't even going to see 4GB for a start. The CPU, you went from a P4 to an AMD. If you had gone from a P4 to a Quad core, maybe. Depends on the applications anyway. For most things you don't need high end hardware. The exception is gaming. And you're not.

Benchmarks can show nice big improvements, but its the users experience that matters. If the window is glitchy or breaks thats alot worse than waiting for a nice progress bar. |
