776667 2009-05-24 23:28:00 I have just finished setting up a network with two PCs and a laptop using a D-Link Ethernet Broadband Router that has an output for a printer.

I thought that I may be able to connect the Fuji Xerox "Document Centre 285/235" into the network but looking at the user guide I can't find anything about it.

There is a printer output on the Ethernet Router and there is a small (serial?) connector on the back of the Xerox that I may be able to use.

I assume that I will need a driver to print to the Xerox as well.

Has anyone any ideas as to how I could connect the Xerox up to the network? It would be good if we could print directly to the Xerox.

:thanks

776668 2009-05-25 00:04:00 How small is the connector on the printer?? Is it 9 pin?? If it is, its probably for a comport, and wont fit on the router. Since it doesnt have a connection Speedy Gonzales (78)
776669 2009-05-25 00:26:00 Does the FX Document Centre not have a built-in network print server? You should be able to just connect it directly to the LAN and then configure it on the PCs via a local TCP/IP printer port. inphinity (7274)
776670 2009-05-25 02:48:00 Thank you, gentlemen.

Speedy: It looks like a small concentrics connector (about the size of a nine pin serial port) but without the clips on the side. The connector on the ethernet router looks like a usual printer connector.

Inphinity: I think that you may be correct. I think I should be able to connect it to the LAN but I have not seen that type of connector before. I would go down to the computer shop and buy the appropriate cable if I knew what type of connecter it was. I suppose I could take the Xerox down to show them the type of connector I require, but I would have to tow it out behind the car! Most probably ruin the wheels!

Does any of that help?

776671 2009-05-25 03:36:00 It should just have an RJ45 port to plug any generic network cable into. As far as I'm aware neither the 235 or 285 were available without a network interface, though that is just my experience.

What you're looking at is probably one of the optional component interfaces, for connecting a bulk paper tray, finisher, duplexer etc.

776672 2009-05-25 04:20:00 Yep - If the printer has an ethernet port, plug an ethernet cable from that right into your router and run the setup CD on the PCs you want to be able to print from.

If your router has a USB print server and you want to use that option (don't know why you'd want to if it's a network capable printer) you'll need to set up TCP/IP ports on the PCs so they'll print, still a simple process but we need to know the model number of the router so we can look up specs and find out what interfaces are available for use...
