2009-05-24 03:36:00 | Hey guys, There have been a lot of threads relating to Windows 7. I thought maybe we could get the mods to sticky this one, that way we can have a single easy to find thread with all the info related to user experiences with Windows 7. Format of your post: System specs: CPU: RAM: Video Card: Storage Space: Security Suite: Which security suite are you using? Did you have any issues? Could you resolve the issues you were having? Hardware and Peripheral Devices Did you have any issues installing any of your hardware? If so, list the issues and which hardware items you had problems with? Network Details: How many hosts etc? Do you have any servers running (Which server OS?) Did you have any issues with the networking side of things? Productivity Applications: Which productvity application suite are you using... (MS Office etc) What's the performance of your office suite like? Gaming: Which games are installed? What's the performance of the games like compared to your previously used OS etc? General comments: How did you find the install? Things you like. Things you don't like. Things you'd like to see in the final release? Thanks,

2009-05-24 03:57:00 | I guess I'll go first: System specs: CPU: P4 3.0 GHz (Prescott) RAM: 3.0GB Video Card: Radeon X800XT Storage Space: 1 x 250GB SATA (XP Pro SP3 installed) 1 x 120GB SATA (Windows 7 installed) 1 x 120GB SATA (general storage) Security Suite: Which security suite are you using? ESET Smart Security 4 Did you have any issues? Windows 7 is unable to read the format of the status of Smart Security. The "fix" is to contact ESET. ESET sight doesn't support Windows 7 issues at present but there is commentary on their websitr stating that ESET Smart Security does work with Windows 7. Could you resolve the issues you were having? There is not resolution to the message in the Windows 7 Action Centre as yet. ESET are still testing and state they will work on it more as Windows 7 gets closer to full public release status. Hardware and Peripheral Devices Did you have any issues installing any of your hardware? None really, I only had to download the Windows 7 version of the Catalyst driver for my Radeon card. Other than that all else went smoothly. If so, list the issues and which hardware items you had problems with? None. Network Details: How many hosts etc? 1 x PC running XP Pro SP3 1 x laptop running XP Pro SP3 1 x Laptop running Vista Home Premium Do you have any servers running (Which server OS?) 1 x Server running Window Server 2003 R2 (Enterprise) Did you have any issues with the networking side of things? None with Windows 7, I had an issue where the Server was blocking write access to a network share, but the issue was resolved by rebooting? It may have something to do with McAfee Anti Virus 8.5i Enterprise Edition, but I'm not too sure. Productivity Applications: Which productvity application suite are you using... (MS Office etc) Running Office 2007 Pro Plus SP2 What's the performance of your office suite like? A lot better than it does on my XP Machine... but I think this is more to with Office 2007 SP2... I'm not running this on the XP install as yet. Gaming: Which games are installed? No games as yet. What's the performance of the games like compared to your previously used OS etc? N/A General comments: How did you find the install? Took a while for the DVD to load... but once into the setup process it went pretty quickly. I was up and running in about 30 - 40 minutes. Things you like. Interface seems smoother.... compared to Vista.. Copying files over the network appears to be faster than XP. Still working my way through the OS at this stage. More to come. Things you don't like. One thing I have picked up on... The quick access link to Internet and Email on the top of the Start Menu (Windows Menu lol) is no longer there. I have a shortcut to my browser which is alright but I have to go through the menu to get to MS Outlook 2007? Things you'd like to see in the final release? See comment above. I've only just started using it so more to come. Cheers,

2009-05-24 04:07:00 | I didnt leave it on long enough (a few days) on the spare PC to find out all of the info. I see no point in installing a beta or RC of anything on a system. Since you'll have to remove it sooner or later But: System specs: CPU: 1.6 GHZ AMD Ram: 1.25 GB ram 80 GB hdd ( 2 40 GB partitions) Security Suite: None, it goes through a router with firewall Did you have any issues? Had a dialup modem and leadtek tuner, but removed them Did you have any issues installing any of your hardware? Nope How many hosts etc? 2 PC's XP SP3 Do you have any servers running (Which server OS?) Nope Did you have any issues with the networking side of things? | 776435 | 2009-05-24 04:33:00 | I don't have all the specs handy but have installed Win7 RC on about eight PCss. All have been mid-range from one to seven years old. So my answer is a sort of combination of experiences across those. System specs: CPU: P4 to Core 2 Duo RAM: 768MB to 4 GB Video Card: Integrated to Radeon M9600 512Mb Storage Space: 40GB to 250GB Security Suite: Which security suite are you using? None, but I set everyone up with standard user, automatic updates, automatic backups, and a bit of education. It's worked for me since the dawn of the Internet, never had a virus on a system managed this way. Did put Avast or Kaspersky for the people I trust less to behave! Did you have any issues? No. Hardware and Peripheral Devices Did you have any issues installing any of your hardware? If so, list the issues and which hardware items you had problems with? Have had problems with beta drivers for: Fingerprint reader - glitches, so just disabled it, driver is labelled beta Flash/SD card reader - had to manually download driver from laptop manufacturer Intel integrated & Radeon graphics cards - glitches, slow-downs, fixed by using the Vista drivers Intel chipset driver installer - complained about wrong Windows version in Win7 beta, persuaded it to install on Win7 RC Network Details: How many hosts etc? Three other computers on home network, Vista, Win7 and Home Server. Do you have any servers running (Which server OS?) Windows Home Server Did you have any issues with the networking side of things? Noticed that Win7 doesn't seem to automatically backup to the Home Server the way the other computers do. Reinstalling the Connector software may fix it but haven't tried that yet it's less hassle just to right-click Backup now. Productivity Applications: Which productvity application suite are you using... (MS Office etc) Tried installing Office 2007 and OpenOffice What's the performance of your office suite like? Fine Gaming: Which games are installed? Sins of a Solar Empire Halo 2 SimCity 3 a few others What's the performance of the games like compared to your previously used OS etc? Seemed fine, I haven't really played much I just installed and tested to see if they work. General comments: How did you find the install? Easy. Really really fast using a USB stick, under 20 mins from clean install to surfing the Web. Things you like. Snapping windows. Taskbar with small icons, labels, combine when full. Troubleshooting service. Just easier to find a lot of things. The window previews and transparency effects. Performance. Things you don't like. Default settings for taskbar. Luckily it's easy to change. Things you'd like to see in the final release? Release it already! Worst experience: The only PC it really didn't perform nicely on was the seven year old 768MB RAM Toshiba I tried it on. Very laggy with full graphics effects. Turning off all the fancy graphics and plugging in a Readyboost drive made it actually quite acceptable for Internet, Word, Excel type stuff but wouldn't want to try any intensive games or apps on it. Best experience: 64bit install on an HP laptop that originally shipped with 32bit Vista. HP had every single driver available that was needed, and incredibly smooth experience. Win7 boots almost twice as fast as Hardy Heron Ubuntu which is installed on another partition on the same machine.

2009-05-24 07:10:00 | The problem with that method is that malware evolves . I'd compare it to the "rhythm method" . Works fine until it doesn't . Definitely . I only use it where I have close supervision and backup so if anything does go wrong it shouldn't cause any serious harm . My experience is it works better than systems that use antivirus and are poorly managed (updates turned off being the most common problem), I see many of those go down . I can't edit my original post any more but the antivirus I've used was Kaspersky and AVG, not Avast . There's a list of Win7 compatible antivirus products here ( . microsoft . com/windows/antivirus-partners/windows-7 . aspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com) for people that want them .

2009-05-24 09:52:00 | Well it seems they need to update that list as their is someone here running Nod on Win 7 & I have Avast working fine on it here. P4 3.0Gghz 1.5 Gig ram No 64bit drivers would work on my Pixma ip3000 printer (tried the Vista ones and the XP ones just to make sure) and wouldn't recognise my print server on the 64 bit either switched to 32 bit and everything works just fine so far

(MS Office etc) Office 2007 SP2 What's the performance of your office suite like? Brilliant - no different to Vista or XP Gaming: Which games are installed? As above Gaming: Which games are installed? none What's the performance of the games like compared to your previously used OS etc? As above General comments: How did you find the install? Smooth Things you like. The taskbar at the bottom is much better than vista, it ran pretty well inside virtualbox on 1gig of the 2gig ram my laptop is, much faster than my vista 1gig desktop. According to a friend of mine who installed the RC on his pc, it loads in about 15s compared to vista in about 45s so all bodes well hopefully Things you don't like. All good Things you'd like to see in the final release? Nothing else i can think of, hopefully prices for the OS will be reasonable. |
