614857 2007-11-26 21:57:00 No, I don't think bar owners should be allowed to dictate workplace conditions with no thought for the health and safety of their staff. The staff were not forced to work there - if they want to work in a smoke-laden environment, it's their choice. From my personal perspective I hate smoke in bars - however I still feel that this law shouldn't have been passed without a lot more consultation than it had.

Neither should consideration of funds and customers inform the process of law-making when that law is being passed solely for the health and safety of workers. But noting that this was not the reason for passing the no-smoking-in-bars law, I'd say that revenue comes into it pretty heavily. Why should the government get to dictate what bar owners can earn, just because a few noisy protesters complain about something?

Out of curiosity Deane... would you support banning loud music in bars? At the current levels it does irreparable damage to staff members' hearing. What about banning alcohol in bars? It damages the customers. Or maybe... yes... let's ban TVs in bars, for discriminating against the optically challenged. Time to ban the customers too, as the staff find serving them too stressful. Finally the workplace is safe... But maybe the staff will feel depressed in a working environment with no other people around? Let's just shut the whole thing down, and prevent any other potential harm.

So in a nutshell Deane, you support banning bars completely?

They own it, people who work there dont have to be there. Health in a bar? Shouldnt they stop selling booze as well then?

No (not that that proves your argument or refutes my own, however.)

Staff aren't forced to drink alcohol while they work in a bar - but they have no choice but to breathe smoke if others are smoking.

To compare toxic, carcinogenic fumes with the drinking of alcohol is facile.

No its not.

To tell an OWNER that he or she can or cant do something in THEIR bar is crap. Workers do not have to work there. Vegetarians arent forced to work in meat works....

Anyway I know you won't see it like I do or Bletch or anybody else really. You never do. So yea, thats me.

Workers don't have to work there? By that reasoning you could dismiss every piece of workplace legislation in place . What about the Holidays Act? Bar owners shouldn't have to give time off to staff - and they don't have to work there if they don't like it?

Anyway I know you won't see it like I do or Bletch or anybody else really . You never do .

So what if I don't see it your way - I still enjoy the discussion . This is an internet forum .

I'm a bleeding heart liberal and proud of it . I'm in favour of workers rights because history shows that employers won't do a single decent thing by their workers unless they're forced to by law .

So yea, thats me .

Ok . Nice talking to you .
