We have tenants who almost caught up with the arrears before the 14 week maternity leave ran out and are now, a month or two later, very, very close to eviction. One more missed payment... Kids COST. Forget the prams and toys at the moment, make sure there's a nest egg for the unexpected (there will be unexpected things) and in case things go wrong. |

| 614692 | 2007-11-25 07:31:00 | Moneys not the be-all end-all. I was a student and my partner unemployed when our child was born. We survived fine (ok it was tight but the bills got paid). We came out of the tough times with a greater ability to cut costs, and also a healthy happy child. Too many people see todays luxuries (disposable nappies for example) as essentials. Bollocks. Clothe nappies take just a bit of extra time to clean, but are well worth it in savings (especially if you get the nappies free from family etc). We had to use milk formula from 3 weeks, but also cut costs avoiding sweet crap, making babies meals from real foods like potato, silverbeet, carrots, etc, all pureed by hand. |

Not really sure what to expect, and after a while all the advise seems to be blurring and not making much sense. I guess I will have to wait till it happens and sort it out when we get there. Congrats Joe, I guess Ill have to wait and see. As for money, we are pretty comfortable, I started saving as soon as I found out, have already started babys bank account and we both have incomes. |

Now we, on the other hand, didn't have the luxury of a 3 bedroom home when our two were born. At the time we lived in a very battered and run down skyline garage - with a tin in an outside shed for a toilet. First winter there wasn't so bad - we were both working. Second winter with a baby wasn't that bad either. Third winter with a toddler, baby and oceans of mud due to us building a house was a bit hard. And did I mention the two labradors, cat and baby goat? |

They were needed alive and kicking to provide warmth at night. There wasn't exactly any insulation in the shed. |

Here's one of my favorite Jack London stories: "To Build A Fire (www.pagebypagebooks.com)" (free to all...even NZ!)..about just that situation. ;) |
