615841 2007-11-28 19:14:00 Notice that all other brands of butter other than PAMS are off the shelves in Pak N Save; and their prices are much higher than they used to be. What has happened?

No but then lately I've been going to New World. They had 4 or 5 brands. I bought the cheapest which was $2.59 as I remember.

615842 2007-11-28 19:24:00 Youse guys don't get it.

The real problem is the "looking like a shortage" so handily being manipulated by the government: you are being primed for "other species" butter.

When the shelves are empty of ANY butter...you'll want it so bad that you'll buy Mouse Milk Butter or Dog Milk Butter.

Gads..think of the marketing ploy! Dastardly!

I submit for consideration names of the new products:

Woof Brand© Butter [Spreads like a friendly tongue!]
Mickey's Butter® [Proudly used at all Disney-Land Expos!]
Ms. Mills Great "E" Spread [Greenies Use It!]

Remember this post?: www.theregister.co.uk

There's no supply problem, like there's no oil shortage here in the US.

They are just pretending that the US has no oil of it's own until the rest of the world's supply is gone and then they'll accidentally "find" it...right where they left it......in the ground with all those oil well caps on them.

Boy...won't the US oil companies be embarrassed then!...but youse guys will always have butter..squeezed from some animal or an-udder!

615844 2007-11-28 22:07:00 Surely if the reason was mainly owing to increased fuel prices, then margarine should have increased by a similar amount, which it hasn't.

I would suggest it is owing to the increased prices that exported dairy products are achieving, leading to an increase in our local market. Why sell cheaper in NZ whey a better price can be obtained overseas? Thus the local price must reflect the export price.

615847 2007-11-29 05:13:00 The price of most staples is rising due to the increase in fuel prices.

Milk prices have increased significantly as well for the same reason, transport costs have increased because fuel prices are up.

Good to see you are on the ball Zqwert,do keep us informed on the common knowledge front.
yet another constructive comment from cicero:rolleyes:

oh, and you're all
WRONG

well, yes fuel does have a small part to play, but that is across all products, especially the imported ones

i believe not long ago Fonterra increased the price of milk solid to encourage dairy farming to remain in NZ as the farmers were going broke and leaving in droves for aussie of all places, or changing to sheep/crops.

so you'd think once Fonterra starts paying the farmers more for the milk, the price of milk and milk products for the end consumer would rise too wouldn't it?

EDIT: and of course export prices will drive the local market to a degree also

615849 2007-11-29 05:30:00 Milk products sell for much more exported than on the domestic market. Any sensible company would sell the same product wherever they get the most money for it. somebody (208)

Same as beef prices - they have gone sky high and worst still, local consumers like you and me are getting meats from those old cows, sheep, and pigs which do not meet EXPORT qualities! Good quality meats are for exports only. Surprisingly, meat prices and salmon (from NZ) prices in Singapore are cheaper (and better quality) than what we are getting back home in New Zealand. I just fail to understand the logic behind all these.
