What I don't like is that when one group stuffs up the Labour govt pass laws so that all of us are penalised instead of dealing to the ones that stuff up !

614849 2007-11-25 04:15:00 Hitler Clark has allowed way to many sh*t laws and restrictions.

Hitler Clarke?

The Labour Govts have introduced some of the most important restraints on the exercise of power in NZ. Take the Regulations Review Committee as just one example. Before that, Ministers could just rule by Orders in Council - changing regulations and schedules at whim.

614850 2007-11-25 04:19:00 I think Penn & Teller hit the nail on the head when Penn said:

If you think there should be a law for something, there probably shouldn't be

They were talking about the government interfering too much.

Whenever I think like, man they should ban that, I think of Penn's quote and I think maybe they shouldn’t – theres too many laws as it is.

614852 2007-11-26 19:34:00 When one really gets down to the facts..the banter and things you see going on in the local and regional government meetings and debates is not what the whole picture is.

There are really larger and exceedingly more powerful groups that are in charge. You are busy watching the dog and pony show while the man behind the curtains is pulling the rug out from under you.

Definately in the states.

OK, I dont really care what they did in the past, I live in the 'now'. In saying that, some of these newer laws that have been passed, couldnt they have been handled better? Is it that hard to ask the public what they want?

By "public", I assume you mean everybody in this jurisdiction. I'm not sure if children were consulted about the Crimes Act section 59 repeal - but they certainly had a right to be consulted. Everybody in this jurisdiction has recourse to the law - whether or not they vote.

Other than the section 59 repeal, what other laws are you referring to when you mention "newer laws"?

614855 2007-11-26 21:02:00 Where to start? Gay marriage, smoking in bars, rights for prisoners.....theres heaps. Just look in here...http://www.lawcom.govt.nz/

Sure some are ok, but take the smoking in a bar for example....shouldnt the owner be allowed to say if somebody can or cant? Many bars have lost funds and customers from this one law.

Just in my opinion, too many changes that are quickly processed and enforced with next to no thought just to please a few voters or do gooders.

I have voted in all my elections except while I was on duty in East Timor and never got what I voted for so i guess Ill just have to put up with it.

No, I don't think bar owners should be allowed to dictate workplace conditions with no thought for the health and safety of their staff.

Neither should consideration of funds and customers inform the process of law-making when that law is being passed solely for the health and safety of workers.
