614348 2007-11-24 00:43:00 Possibly slightly easier to distribute the weight around more evenly in a station wagon.

Advantages of a station wagon: easier access to stuff

Disadvantages: No boot to hide things in if you have a smaller load and want to leave it parked for a bit.

The weight to car ratio is probably more to do with a size of car to weight ratio. A bigger heavier car would cope better with a heavy load than say a mini.

If you're going to do it a lot a van would be better - but this depends on other uses too.

614349 2007-11-24 00:57:00 Station wagons are generally set up in anticipation of them carrying some sort of load ie I have a Subaru Outback wagon and there's usually only me driving it... no passengers, no load... The other day I purchased something big/heavy, loaded it in the back and the whole ride of the vehicle changed... cornered nicely, gear ratio seemed great, ride was smoother. Probably chewed through 3 times as much gas though :)

I'm now seriously considering getting:

a) a XXXL partner

b) a very big dog

c) an on board pool like on those cruise ships

614350 2007-11-24 01:04:00 Other advantages of a station wagon:

I may not be able to keep up with the two young invincible drivers on our road (the ones that send the dog scuttling for the ditch when they approach when we're out for a walk) but if I'm in front of them I sure can slow them down :D

614351 2007-11-24 01:43:00 ....... I noticed that when I would go over bumps the back tyres would actually scrape whatever was above the tyres - not a nice noise. ..........

your probably scraping the mud flaps on the ground. to much weight and you will hit the bump stops. makes for a very uncomfortable drive when you keep smacking the bump stops.

It is truly awful to drive with lots of stuff in it. I was backing out of a client's driveway today (and a relatively flat one at that) and my towbar caught on the concrete. I'd put my foot down and not move at all.

I really enjoyed to jump in power going from my 1.5L carbed Civic to this 2.2L Accord, but with all this stuff in it, as soon as it changes into 2nd gear it's like driving a bus!

If I buy a station wagon it will probably have to be some sort of V6...

I do this all the time and usually have a boot full of stuff, and a fair bit of the back seat too. It would be very, very nice to be able to have that space free and have it in the boot instead.

As for the cornering comment, I would be willing to bet that my car will understeer ridiculously right now with all the weight in the back, but of course I'm never going to go around corners at any remote speed with all the stuff - it would slide over and kill me.

Brilliant :D.

Question: Are Mitsubishi Legnums as bad as many people say they are, especially in terms of fuel consumption?

I'm referring to the 2.5L V6 station wagon version, mid to late 90s.

I currently get about 9km per litre (not very impressive), and would like to see similar fuel economy if I switch cars.

614357 2007-11-25 18:39:00 So, how much CAN I safely put in my car? I can't find any maximum load rating anywhere, and I don't want to find out the hard way that I am overloading the suspension.

If I was to buy a station wagon, say a Toyota Camry / Honda Accord wagon, how much (in kgs) would I then be able to fit in the boot? I'm talking weight not size here.

What you should be worrying about is all those heavy lumps joining you in the front seat when you run into something. A station wagon won't necessarily help that.
